For a 22" Browning X-bolt in .243

Friend just paid $600 for the rifle, it's for his daughter, and he's dead set on Leupold glass. He says he's willing to spend the price of the rifle on a scope.

Also, what base and rings for whatever model you suggest.

This is for a 14 year old young lady.

just get a Leupold VX2 3-9x variable

it's around $300, maybe less

it will outlast the rifle

any VX2 or VX3 leupold is an excellent scope

I will bring that to his attention.  Looks like a nice glass.

This guy has just discovered Gunbroker and is going a little nuts. It's fun to watch.

Ha.  Yea, helping other people spend their money and going through the selection process can be a hoot.

A basic VX-3 3.5-10x40 with Duplex reticle retails for $624.

The next one down I'd consider would be the VX-2 3-9x40 with LR Duplex reticle at $439 retail.  Of course street prices should be less for all of these.

That magnification range is well-suited for the caliber, gun and shooter (to me at least). These scopes are not too big, not too heavy, and provide a clean, classic hunting rifle look.

In the last 3 weeks he's bought a Browning A-5 and now this .243

He is looking for a 10 gauge for no real reason other than he wants one.

He's a good guy. I'm going to get him to the range eventually and have him try my ARs. If he enjoys those, and who wouldn't, I'm pretty sure he will go full LaRue or BCM right from the git go. He seems to have no problem spending money lately.

Is that VX-R an illuminated reticle or an etched series of dots?

If she is shooting texas deer a 3x9 is just fine. If she is shooting groundhogs or something like that might step it up a bit.
Rifles with 3x9 scopes have killed a kabillion pounds of meat.
( kabillion probably isnt number, but you know what i mean)
Leopold, Good scope.

It will be for deer hunting.

I agree that 3-9x40 is about perfect. He doesn't seem to grasp the reality that whitetail hunting in Texas requires a friend with land or thousands of dollars.

He's from Alabama.
