http://fox59.com/2015/10/07/farmers-harvest-hundreds-of-acres-in-one-day-to-help-friend-with-terminal-cancer/

GALVA, Ill. (October 7, 2015) – An Illinois community came together to help a man with terminal cancer harvest 450 acres of corn.

Jason Bates writes in a lengthy Facebook post that his cousin Carl Bates has terminal cancer and doesn’t have much time left to live. With his health failing, Carl’s cousin Dan Bates began to wonder how Carl would harvest his 450 acres of corn.

Dan spoke with some of Carl’s neighbors, and Dan says “it all just exploded from there.”

That is the way that it is supposed to be: neighbors taking care of neighbors.

I had a friend, now deceased, who was a farmer in Illinois. He had a heart attack right about harvest time. Same deal. Neighbors showed up to get all of the corn in.

Stuff like this makes me proud to be an American.

Maybe there's still hope for Illinois after all.

Good to see neighbors looking out for each other.

Not far from me, this happens frequently and it's cool to see everyone pull together to get the corn in.

If all of crook county and the city of rockford disappeared,  IL is a pretty cool place.

So what is 450 acres of corn worth?  Would this be like losing his yearly income if it was left to rot?

Not sure about the worth, but it's likely this was his income for the year.  Farming is a tough game and small farms are sadly disappearing.

Depends on yield and what the current market price is, or what price he sold it for.

Most farmers live crop to crop. Lose a year of yield and it's possible a guy can go under.

Yep, offspring are all too happy to subdivide the farm into subdivisions or townhouse lots........Farming is tough work,  subdividing only requires a signature.

I doubt that's his entire yearly income, but it could definitely be more than enough to make or break him.

Yeah, lots of farmers are "millionaires."  There's several farmers and ranchers around here who meet that qualification.  What lots of folks don't realize, is how much of that money isn't fungible.  It's the seed money, literally, for next year's crop.  It's the maintenance for this year's crop.  It's the crop itself.  It's the combines, the tractors, the various pumps, building utilities, payroll for the workers, taxes on the land, sometimes the lease or mortgage for the land as well.  Around here, the farmers and ranchers often drive new cars and trucks, yes.  But having 50k in pocket change for a new car is nothing when if your crop fails, you're 5, 10, 20 million in debt.

That estimated quarter-million dollars those 450 acres represented could be the difference between having to sell everything in order to eat, or having a farm to pass down to his family next year.

And that is just revenue. People outside ag would be shocked at what a bag of seed cost.

Looks like 3 gleaners to me.  We use a r75, the gleaners are a lot better for seed bean production. Deere tend to grind up snd Crack soybeans, making them useless as seed, gleaners just do a smoother job processing the grain.

My dad had a heart attack in August 94. I was a teenager who had never taken much initiative when it came to farm work. Neighbors pitched in and helped me cut and hang 3 acres of tobacco.

My best friend and best man at my wedding is a dairy farmer and while I can't give you an exact # of acres he plants to corn....this years crop cost close too $100,000 to get into the ground this past spring..his goes to feed his cows and doesn't sell any so in his situation if corn didn't get chopped it would pretty much bankrupt the operation in short order.

If you do the math, 450 acres with 10 combines for 10 hours. Works out to 45 acres a day. I think that is on the slow side. 10 combines on 450 ac would be a giant cluster fuck.

That's right. It comes right in the package. Grown that way.  No animals were harmed in the production of your hamburger meat.

It depends, when did he crack his first beer?

But seriously with corn it might be 20 acres or less if the farmer has to drive the truck to the elevator or if he has contract trucks it could be 50 acres.  My Dad had at a minimum 15 trucks on the turnrow or on the way to the elevator (lines of 40 or more trucks waiting to dump) during corn harvest.
