Simple reply, and you can use the same concept to assess many ideas. Substitute the "you owning guns" part, with "you having free speech"....

Every day, we exercise free speech, but it is entirely possible that someone can misuse free speech. To slander others, incite violence, lie and misrepresent things, etc. etc.  Does that mean we should curtail free speech?

ETA: Along these lines, if someone abuses their right of free speech, we have laws that define the infraction and then prescribe measures to judge and possibly punish the offender. The same thing holds true with firearms ownership. Mere possession is not a particular crime against someone, but if someone misuses the firearm, ie: uses it to commit a crime, assault, etc, then that is a crime with a prescribed consequence. We would do well to punish actual crimes, not the "potential crime" of possession.

Next time, go to a good school and do yourself a favor and learn how to think logically and reason things out so you don't go around asking stupid question based on assumptions you're clearly not able to think through on your own.

What about cell phones + driving?

True, I'll get a little more simplistic and closer to home for them:

I phones can be used to download child porn, therefore you being allowed to own an i-phone hurts children, thus I-phones should be banned.

Beat me to it.  80k + alcohol related deaths per year, but no one is demanding tough new alcohol control laws.

In fact, I wrote a little something about that very topic.

I would say that it would make a liberal's head explode, but they probably won't read it because feels.

If they were truly about saving lives, they'd be pushing this.  They're not, because it would affect THEM.

The only answer is the truth but everyone tap dances around it. Always mentioning self defense from home invaders and stuff like that. No one want to tell it like it is.

Tell them that the right exists because human history has shown that humans are capable of great evil, especially when in great power. The right exists to be a barrier to government lever evil. Sure it might not happen in our immediate lifetime but what about the next generation, or the one after that. To disarm or limit us now because modern life is nice and cozy at the moment it for say Fck you to the next generations after us. Its selfish as shit but of course folks who support gun control only care about themselves on the whole. I love my family and I will surely love my grandchildren and if I love long enough I will most definitely love my Great Grandchildren. While I will be dead and gone I can leave the earth knowing I did everything possible to ensure their safety  from human history inevitably coming around.

Yes bad people do bad things wit guns occasionally But the occasional nutjob going crazy is NOTHING like an armed and unchallenged government of them.

We are not selfish, we love our kids, we love freedom. They do not.

Response? Disarming a populace directly gets them exterminated at some point.

Rights aren't invalidated by the potential of anothers misuse.

The red part above is the response you're looking for.
At the heart of it, it's a "personal responsibility" issue. You've harmed no one by owning and having access to firearms. Period. If somebody else commits a crime with a firearm you are still innocent in the exercising of your gun rights. Period. If somebody else messes up then that's on them and you should not be punished for any action or event for which (a) you had no part in and (b) had no way to control yourself. As another poster implied in this thread, should your friend lose his car and drivers license because his neighbor across the street got into a car accident and hurt somebody? It's the same analogy and if he still refuses to see the fallacy of his original argument then he can't be helped.

No it doesn't.

Arguing with idiots is not going to change what the gun-grabbers will or won't do.   They are committed to this course for a number of reasons. All you're doing is pointing yourself out for them to screw with you.

For the most part, people putting out anti-gun statements like that are either stupid beyond helping or leftists arguing in bad faith.   Nothing you say is going to matter to either of those groups.

Your right to do X hurts society because someone else is going to misuse that right?  Well yes that can be applied to guns, but it can be applied to all sorts of other things as well.

As an innocent but poor person wrongly targeted by the police I have a right to a public defender, but a REAL criminal gets a public defender too, and that means he may get off on a technicality, which hurts society.  Therefore, no one should get lawyers.

As an adult citizen, I get to vote.  As a responsible voter, I do some research before I vote and make what I think are informed decisions.  But because I have the right to vote simply because I am a citizen and of legal age....so does everyone else, including dummies who are ill informed and who may be easily swayed to vote for politicians who are going to be very bad for us all.  Therefore, no one should be allowed to vote.
