Tamiya had the ones I wanted.  Also had a cool open house in Irvine, Ca where they had WWII stuff and model racing on a couple of tracks.

Tamiya cuts the molds in Japan and produces a new release in Japan for 2 years. After 2 years a set of molds are transported to the Philippines and their produced there.

That's mainly due to production space at the Tamiya Japan plant

A lot of Tamiya kits are molded in the Phillipines now.

I've got a brand new Panther Ausf. D molded in the Phillipines. That kit just came out this year.

Anyone here do 1/43 resin models?

I really enjoy the scale.

Out of production. EBay or the used kit market will be his best bet

They must have changed policy in the past couple years, used to be they only moved the molds after 2 years.

I would still say the molds are cut in Japan then shipped to the Phillipines.

I saw that Panther D at the Nats in July, very nice and on my wants list down the road. Last "new" Tamiya kit I bought was the 1/32nd scale Spit Mk IX series. Ain't started one yet, I've been house hunting and don't want to start a large scale project until I move.......last time I did that (10 years ago) I lost too many parts

I'm thinking the car models. I still have some of mine from 30 -35 years ago. I even have some kits from then, not built. The Lee Majors Stunt Guy Chevy truck is one of them. I think a Yarburough Chevelle. Not sure but red number 11 car. Cannonball Run movie car? Me and my buddies used to build them. None of my sons really got into them.

If you have old complete kits...  you really should sell them.

Reasons:

They'll pay for your entry into the hobby. Tools, paints, kits, etc.

http://www.modelroundup.com/product-p/mpc-1709.htm

Most kits have been "remodeled" and re-released, so if you buy a Chevelle kit off the shelf now, it's going to be a far nicer kit.

Old kits have a lot of collector value, but practical value for building? Not so much, in most people's opinion.

What did you use for the metallic paint on your B-58? Alclad 2? It looks great!

And thank you! The Flanker was a great deal of fun (and work) to build. It's a model of the demonstrator Su-35, #901. I used photoshop to enlarge drawings of the camo scheme to 1:1 so I could use them as templates to cut the mask.

And to answer OP's question, for aircraft, I give a +1 to previous recommendations of Tamiya, Hasegawa, Eduard. The Korean company Academy also has some nice offerings. The newer Airfix kits are indeed nice with recessed panel lines and good detail overall. For armor, a big +1 to Dragon /DML kits.

they make tiger 1 model tanks out of metal, and they weigh around 300lbs..... cost you some $$   but you could ride around on it... about the size of a  atv.

you just need 2 of them...... mount a camera system, and a semi auto 308 / saiga 12 guage, shooting slugs as the main gun, and have real tank battles.

That finish was the result of lots of misadventures with testors metallizer rattle cans and "future" floor wax.  It turned out good, but I don't recommend my approach.  It was sort of a miracle after all the fuck-ups I made.

Achieving a good NMF is incredibly difficult, I found.  Every minor imperfection is so visible, like a rockchip in your windshield.

Here is the process: for your amusement and possible enlightenment:
1) Tamiya spray primer, but only on some panels.  This helped to give the metallizer coat different sheens
2) Sand super smooth.
3) Mask & spray metallizer paint.
4) Allow metallizer to dry, then buff to a shine
5) Mask over metallizer, spray other color of metallizer on different panels.
6) Remove masking, discover that masking ruins previous metallizer layers.
7) Sand off all metallizer
8) Mask & spray metallizer paint (first layer, again)
9) DO NOT BUFF, I discovered that I could mask ONCE over metallizer if I did not buff it.  Tape would remove the loosely adhered metallizer dust only.
10) Strategically mask (per #9) and apply various colors of metalizer.
11) Achieve perfect finish, then break #3 engine off the wing.  Swear profusely.  Vow to give up hobby.
12) Somehow reattach #3 engine, and touch up metalizer at the seam (exactly how is a mystery to this day)
13) Once again achieve perfect finish, this time without damaging any engines
14) Revel in accomplishment.  Brag and show off on web forum
15) Apply "future" floor-wax finish to seal for decals.
16) Realize finish now looks candy-coated instead of metallic.  Swear profusely.  Vow to give up hobby.
17) Two week hiatus, then start again at #2

18) Choose to avoid NMF finishes for future builds!

Don't discount the newer Chinese kits (Trumpeter, Hobby Boss, Meng, Bronco, Tiger Models, and Rye Field Models) if you are looking for armor [especially modern], ships, and aircraft.  I'd avoid the new DML Black Label (i.e. "Black Plague") kits - the M6, M103, and Conqueror Tanks.  All of them are plagued with dimensional errors.

There are lots of decals and even resin modification or correction parts for airliners. Just watch out as some of the sellers like to take your money, and maybe 25% of the people who order actually get something.

bingo.

japanese = best quality.

Italian models are generally meh. They will do the job when no one else makes what you want but they were be simplistic and generally lack
interiors and finer details.

Russian models are pretty crude, avoid them.

I have a closest full of model kits that I bought last year on a spending spree after having just got back into the hobby after a 10 year absence, and now I have a lifetime supply of shit and wonder .....why the fudge I did that. At least I can get my money back on gun stuff.
Now when I wanna feel depressed I just go in there and look at all the shit I will never have time to build.

This is the site you seek.

http://www.dragonusaonline.com/

I shopped for months looking for the best deals and that is where you will find the best sales.

https://www.scalehobbyist.com/

This site has the best selection and inventory as well as the best competitive prices. They are generally a dollar or two above the lowest super
special sale price you will find anywhere. Which tells me their markup is hardly anything, so if you want to one stop shop they are the place to do it.

Squadron.com is a ripoff. They rise the prices real high so they can give steep discounts and everything you want is always out of stock.

agreed

for armor AFV, Meng, Takom and Dragon seem to be the best in terms of price and detail.

Academy and tamiya imho are for beginners and some of the stuff like their parts like rubber bandish tracks seems to always come off.

Trumpeter, hobbyboss are the kind of middle of the road. Sometimes you will find them cheaper then the rest but I would buy them above academy or tamiya.
