But muh nostalgia!? Don't own one. They're fairly capable but outclasses by the 5.8 GT500 and Hellcat in a straight line. If you want out of the box 580? hp it's good to go. If you plan on modding a regular SS with suspension work and a larger supercharger has more room to grow.

One of my friends has a ZL1 vert that he picked up in November 2012.  I'm not a fan of the lack of visibility on that particular generation of Camaro, but it is a nice car.  At least the visibility issue is cured when the top goes down!

Here is a pic of it the day he got it:

We rolled our own;

Wife's 2010 2ss
East Coast Supercharger
Kooks, head to tail
PCM tune

Right at 650 hp
About 42k in it, plenty left to do.

I was less aroused by the styling than the wife was, in 2010.
But now, IDGAF what it looks like - if an 87 dodge caravan
was this quick and this much fun, it would still be beautiful.

So no ZL1 here, but close enough to say try one, you'll like it.
(Unless you're a fucking sissy - then I can't say for sure)

The mustang convertible just has some extra braces to stiffen the chassis.  The extra weight is from all the motors and crap it takes to operate the roof, but then again there's a weight savings from not having the metal roof.  Sort of a wash but 'verts always weigh 100-200 lbs more

Is the cowl hood needed for underhood clearance or is it just for looks?

Because chunky car already looks chunky.

If it is functional then ok.

Prob to fit the top mount SC.
Without going dry sump and adding $$$$ to the build they couldn't make it clear under the normal camaro hood.

Couldn't afford the ZL1 but I just bought a 2014 2SS/RS 6 speed manual with 2700 miles and damn near every option.

Loving this car. After 25 years of Wranglers and SUV's the 426 hp is plenty enough to scare the balls off me.

Basically both..couple hundred pounds is a couple hundred pounds, and rigidity is key for handling..weather straight line acceleration or cornering....

ETA...just as an example..a quality cage which would add even more rigidity would add a couple hundred pounds...making the solid structure car the same weight as the convertible..without a cage...

Then just say that? Hell I even agree with you. Having a fully loaded, forced induction car being called the ZL1 is the exact opposite of the original. Ford and GM need to take a note from Dodge and come up with some new names for performance packages.

Yes, I once owned a 1969 Z/28 Camaro plus a few other classics - just traded a frame-off restored '69 El Camino SS/396 towards a 2016 Z06 (1LZ with eight-speed paddle-shift auto as the only option).

Today's vehicles are much nicer in every way.

Old ones are nostalgic, but that's about it.

Lot's of guys like the oldies - great for them, just not my cup of tea anymore.

New ZL1's are nice - 580HP/556TQ super-charged 6.2L engine - what's to hate.

Dealer has a black/black/black (body/interior/wheels) one in stock that is very nice - $60 MSRP - wants about $56K - optioned out pretty well - link.

Dad had a 2SS right after they came out.

I was left wholly unimpressed. It was a luxury car parading around as a car of yesteryear.
To be fair, neither of the offerings from Ford or Dodge did anything either.

We rolled our own;

Is that real 650hp or ricer 650?

What fuel mods? Injectors? Isn't PCM tune a mail order job?

Real 650rwhp.  Click the links.  Matt's s/c kit comes with injectors and a pump voltage booster - a truly complete kit.
PCM of NC tuned the car on the dyno at their shop in Race City USA, they are serious 21st century hot-rodders.

There's easily another 50hp on the tune, but we're lock stock tranny back and I let everyone and their brother drive it -
so better safe than sorry for now

Yeah who the hell would drive a miata, much less race one, thinking it's sporty?  Pass the skoal, Cletus.

Not to mention HP was rated differently back then, that "425hp" emblem on a muscle car would probably be no more than 250whp by todays HP standards lol.
My old modded yamaha SHO back in the day would hang with almost all those muscle cars and get 20+mpg around town.

I got my first car in the mid 90's and it was a 68 camaro with a 350, quadrajet carb, intake, headers, M21 and a 12 bolt rear end and I could barely hang with my friends completely stock 240hp IROCZ camaro.

I love old cars and respect them for what they are but I love to DRIVE not look at my cars/treat them as investment pieces so its hard to ignore the advantages that newer cars bring.

Couldn't afford the ZL1 but I just bought a 2014 2SS/RS 6 speed manual with 2700 miles and damn near every option.

Loving this car. After 25 years of Wranglers and SUV's the 426 hp is plenty enough to scare the balls off me.

that's what the wife has.
it's her favorite car ever, and she used to have a 2009 C6 Vette.
