Because i eat hot peppers every day. 5 habaneros and 3 jalapenos yesterday with my lunch.
3 jalapenos with my supper tonight (beans and cornbread). I always ate spicy food but my best friend (he is a MD) got me started eating peppers every day if possible. I'm not saying it cures acid reflux, I'm saying if you condition yourself to eat hot daily you won't easily get acid reflux. Barring some physical reason. It also cures being a little puss!!!!! |

I have eaten hot spicy foods my entire life and unfortunately acid refux is hereditary in my family. I started getting it really bad at about 35yrs old and have been in a daily medicine for the last 2yrs.

If you were to keep a log of the food you eat I bet you would find that the greasy part of the equation is greater than the spicy. I can eat the spiciest of foods with no problem but make it greasy and I pay the price. I look at it as a blessing, staying away from greasy food has saved me a fortune in clothing, I have worn the same size for 30+ years. |

We eat Thai often, and I have my green curry prepared "twice Thai hot" (the hottest they will make it), every time. And every time I eat it my head gets wet from sweat and I love the endorphin rush and buzz. But I've been taking Tagamet (cimetidine) daily for, I guess, at least over a decade now.

You've never had it because your body is functioning normally and closing the valve that keeps stomach acid out of your esophagus.
Not much more too it than that. |

Spicy foods have nothing to do with it, at least in my experience. It is all about acid. I get acid reflux from primary two things: coffee and alcohol. If I eat raw onions it sometimes does it, but I generally avoid those due to taste preferences. Acid reflux only started getting routine it after I hit a quarter century.

Imagine it, because when they're selling a medication that they're making billions on, they don't give a shit how many hands it is in. They actually used to require a scrip for the stuff. This is no different than the situation that just happened a few days ago with the potentially life saving medication that went from something like 35 cents a pill to $500 a pill overnight. I read the Prilosec turning OTC in a medical journal during my paramedic certification. I believe it was the Lancet. This was in the pre internet days. It also said it was communicable. I'm not going to go digging through twenty five year old magazines to find you a link to an article that may or may not exist. They interviewed the Australian doctor in it and even though his cure had already hit the streets and was being practiced, many doctors were still howling for him to be disbarred. Many people dealing with GERD in both first and third world countries is caused by H Pylori contracted when they're children. H Pylori (Ulcers/GERD) went from a multi billion dollar a year industry (Prilosec) to a curable malady (Antibiotics). While what you say is true, he and anyone else with any kind of questionable issue regarding their stomach (Pain, bad breath, reflux, etc) should get tested. I'm not going to rule out a potential easy fix because it isn't what happened to you. |

This is pure nonsense. I eat way hotter foods than you, and have had GERD since I was a child. OK |

There are multiple things that cause acid reflux, some things can be helped, some can't. In my case, I have a hiatal hernia that makes me prone to it. It could be rectified, but due to weak muscles in the esophagus, I would have an even harder time getting food down. While some of your guys ideas may work for some things, it sadly won't for me. Let me tell you, I'd love to be done with it. You haven't lived until you sat in ER for a couple of hours, feeling like you're drowning. When you have a blockage, all that saliva and mucus that normally is running down into your stomach, especially when you're in distress has no where to go. It backs up and will try to go into your lungs. So every 10 minutes you run into the bathroom, and hack what you can out.
