Is it true there were deals like and AK and a thousand rounds for around 500.00?

I hear stories of stacks of these things at gun shows back in the day.

I got my preban 56S in 1991, so I was a bit late to the party for really cheap ChiCom stuff, but I did buy a 1440rd case of silver box ChinaSport and paid $133, or $136 delivered via UPS.

I still have 16 boxes of that stuff, lol.

If that much? I paid somewhere in the neighborhood of $300 for an MAK90. 1200 rounds of ammo was in the $65-75 range.
That was in about 1989 maybe 1990?

I paid 85 whole dollars for my Chinese SKS

$500?

Honestly I don't remember how much ammo my first one came with, but I paid $400 for the 7.62x39 one.

The second one I bought was the 86s in 5.56.  Paid 350 for that one, it didn't come with ammo.

The SKS I paid $100 and I don't remember how much ammo it came with, but it was on stripper clips.

All bought in '87-'88. before that shithead shot up the playground.

299 Norinco AKs. They couldn't give them away. 1200 round spam cans of good ammo, just over 100 bucks. It wasn't that long ago. We would still have those deals if your government didn't stop the imports.

That's pretty much what my Dad was saying when my nine year old self was telling him those $99 MAK-90's seemed like a really good deal.

With C&R's going into collector pricing and all the interesting foreign stuff being US rebuilt parts kits this shit ain't as interesting as it used to be.

I bought a SKS in the late 80s for 99 dollars. It came with a bandoleer and had cosmoline on it.
The store sold sandwiches, gas, porn under the shelf on vhs, and you could order guns.

I'm 45, so yes, remember them well. I wish that I had stacked the AKs and ammo deep back then. I also wish that I had bought more 30-rounders to sell after the ban in 94. I'll be more prepared for the next ban.

This right here. On my eighteenth birthday I bought two mak90's for 200 cash. Told my dad to buy a couple as well and he laughed.

the good 'ol days.

at that point i simply had too much turmoil and not enough money in my life to be into guns..it wasn't until the early 90's that my interest started to pick up and by that point those deals were gone or fading.  i did manage to pick up a poly-tech NM legend around 1990 or so though.  $1000.00 or so I think.

The non sale price of 1440 rounds was $99. Other non sale prices were $79 for Russian SKS and $299 for a fixed stock Poly Tech or $349 for a folder. Advertised at T&T weekly in the NY Daily News. Gun show prices were $20-50 less.

The Mak 90s came out years later. Started at $200, and dropped as they did not sell because they were "junk", seriously.

Mini 14s (older inaccurate ones) sold well at $400 :)

I don't remember AK's ever being 99.00....... but do remember 79.00 SKS's........and bought a Century imported G-43 for 399.00....

My first AK was a NIB Clayco underfolder....279.00. I want to think the Steyr imported Maadi's were something like 600.00......way more than a transferrable MAC cost!

Back then you had basically 3 AR choices.....Colt, Sendra, or SGW.....

I got a Chinese SKS that took AK mags, around 500 rounds, and a bag of magazines from my brother for $300 around 1988. It was a real one, not some Bubba job. It worked.

He hosed me on the price, too. He bought around ten guns from his buddy who had to sell them because of a conviction. I think he paid around $1,000 for all of them. The cherry on top was an A1 that he sold for $1500 in 1996.

Yes the Chinese make stuff cheap, plus inflation since then. Hell give it a few years and people will be asking if wasrs, or mosins where really as cheap and plentiful as old timers say. Hell When I was a kid the big 5 and turners outdoorsman ads had cheap lee enfields, vz24s, m95/30s, and turkish mausers in the sale ads every sunday. M38, m44, m91s where sub $80 on sale. You could also buy a Mas 36 still in mummywrap complete with arsenal tags a sling a french manuel, pull through cleaning thing for like $199. Try finding anything for those prices. Mossberg 500 special purposes where also $199. When stuffs cheap jump on it if it interests you most likely the deal wont last.

Oh yeah and im only 30 so its not like this was all that long ago. More recent examples the 7.62 tokarev ammo, 5.45, west german 7.62 battle packs, malaysian 7.62 ammo cans, yugo skses, etc.

No,,it was more like an AK and a thousand rounds for $285 on sale out the door back in the 80's

I have seen wooden crates of copper washed 7.62X39 steel core on strippers for $80 out the door.I remember SKS's on sale for less than $80 when regular price was $89

The AK was slow to catch on here because of the made in china stamp and the old school mind set of the shooting public.

My dad bought a new HK 94 with six mags and a few HK accessories in 85 for around $500. That was a lot of money then but price one now.

During the peak (lowest) prices, in Kalifornia, SKS are around $70 to $80 each, and AKs are around $125 each, and the dealers are giving away magazines and ammo. with purchases.
At the same time Colt Delta HBar is around $500 each, Belgium Browning FALs are around $700 and HK 91/93/94s are around $600-$700, with free magazines.
Also, back then, Kalifornia have no waiting period for rifle and shotguns.
Alas, all good things come to the end.
The gangs were buying up SKS and AKs, and use them for drive-by, instead of using those piece of crap pot metal pistols (Lorcin and likes)
Kalifornia legislators have their Assault Weapon Ban bill all written, waiting for the trigger event (Richard Purdey), and the rest are history.

My first AK was in 2001/2002.
It was a Romanian SAR1. Got it from a gunshow for about $300. Cases of Wolf ammo were around $100. I was a rookie newb back then and probably could have found the rifle cheaper if I shopped around more. Chinese AKs were priced higher than the romys but hat should give you an idea on prices of things at that time

PSA kits I guess. Cheap foreign semi-autos have grown scarce either due to fedgov import bans or as a result of surplus drying up.

We'd get some nice Izhmash and Norinco guns for a decent price if it weren't for a combination of protectionism and spite.

Back in 83 we were buying are first house and interest rates were stupid high north of 19%. We were lucky to get 13.5%,.
Just a matter of priorities and disposable income. Those would be the salad days for guns and ammo, but who knew?

Yes.  One of the guys in my unit picked up several Chicom underfolders for under $250 each.

What I always thought was funny is that he had some empty property we would go out to shoot on.

He always carried a Charter 38 snub with him in case we ran into "unfriendly persons" while there.

Ok, so you have 2 AK's with 20 fully loaded mags and you carry a 5 shot 38 in case you run into trouble? Lol

I bought 3 SKS rifles and a case of ammo on stripper clips for $199.00 out the door at the Cincinnati Gardens gun show. The deal consisted of 3 well used rifles - banded together - so no choice on condition, they were guaranteed to function but nothing else. They were stacked liked fire wood and the crates of ammo were on pallets. You could buy an accessory pack for $15 consisting of 3 slings, cleaning kits and bandoleers. The rifles actually cleaned up pretty well - I still have one in the safe.

Funny thing is they weren't selling - I remember the dealer bitching about havering to move all the ammo back to the shop.....

I picked mine out of a wood crate {1975} or so, stacked full of the sks [d's], mine looked new, got a gun cleaning kit, a ammo belt with little green bottles in the pouches? 5 boxes ammo if i remember right, bayonett and sling for $79. It's still maybe the most reliable gun i have to this day.
