Don't want to burn data up on my phone watching the videos, but I'd assume they're boiling down the piss for the nitrates? They used to gather bat droppings from caves for the same thing (saltpeter, IIRC)

Somebody once told me that in Sweden, back in the old days, each household would keep a stack of manure out in the sun, which they poured their urine over. After a while, a yellow crystalline crust would form on the manure stack. This crystal was potassium nitrate (or whatever saltpeter is) used to make gunpowder. They had to pay their tax to the gov't in saltpeter.
