I own 2 - FAL (18" DSA and 20" Imbel), 2 - M1A (Scout and Standard) and 2 - AR10 both Armalite (16" and 20"). I like them all but my favorite is the 16" AR10. Quick, relatively light, accurate, versatile and familiar. It's perfect for me. YMMV.

Been making a similar decision lately.
I've been tempted by the low cost .308 AR builds out there, but I'm going to wait for the market to shake itself out a little more on that front. After shooting the M1A, FAL and HK style rifles, I'm going to pick up a PTR (HK91 style)...though I enjoyed shooting them all. Especially with the new railed PTRs, the G3/91 guns just seem like a great option to me because they're about as customizable as you can get without being an AR-15. Easy to mount optics on. Want a collapsible stock or fixed stock? Pop out two pins and use whichever works for what you need at the moment. Bipod and large handguards? No problem. Slim handguards? Done. They're even making mlok and keymod railed handguards for the things now. Mags are cheap, triggers are easily and cheaply cleaned up by pros. Mangled brass appears to be an overhyped issue, especially with the right recoil spring set up. They may not work for everyone but I thoroughly enjoyed the one I got to shoot, more so than either the M1A or the FAL. I'll be picking up one or two this year. |

In order of my favorite ones that I own it goes SCAR 17, DSA SA-58 Para Carbine, JLD PTR-91k.

My 5.56 collection is GTG so I'm looking at buying a 308/7.62 rifle, primarily for fun and just curious what everyone's favorite is. I was thinking something semi-auto and mag fed.... Like this Springfieldd M1A Socom 16 http://www.springfield-armory.com/products/m1a-socom-16/ Probably put a low powered scope on it and a light weight bipod. But i'm open to all ideas as I have never owner or even fired a 308 before so I dont really know whats out there. View Quote As much nostalgia as is associated with the M1A, the truth is that the AR-10 and its variants are superior in every single way. If I were in the market for a semi auto 308, that's where I'd be looking. |
|
I'd take a very hard look at the new small framed .308 AR's.
They weigh in a pound or two below the older full sized .308 AR's and are more compact. DPMS isn't the only kid in that game thankfully! |

LaRue PredatOBR. It is so choice. I highly recommend one if you have the means.

There aren't many I care for in 308. M24, FAL and M110. I guess the M110 could be broken down to copies/variants so that could make a few more. I'd say a SCAR 17 but I've never used one.

DPMS pattern AR
P-Mags and parts availability. I bought the budget model from Academy for $750 a few months back. No malfunctions and no complaints so far. |

One rifle I want to try is the SIG 542 and its newer derivative, the SIG 751 (scaled-up Stgw-90).

I really like both my SCAR 17's and my FAL. Also have several other 308 hunting/target shooting rifles. My HK91 rarely gets fired anymore. Which do you like better , Scar or FAL? Tough call. I think the SCARS are more versitile but my FAL is select fire so it's a lot of fun too(and it just keeps on running). If I'm heading out the door due to SHTF I'll grab my SCARS; the accuracy, lighter weight and optics mounting ability just makes them our go to guns. |

U.S. Rifle caliber 30 M1.
Well it is 7.62 caliber x63. Damn missed the NATO part of the post. |

I have an FAL and a Socom II M1A. Really love them both. Seriously not sure which one I'd pick if I could only have 1. Socom damn fun to shoot. FAL so smooth. Really can't go wrong with either one.

View Quote I have one of these. All the German eagle proof marks, etc, got stamped out. Except for the pristine one on the bolt. When I took it apart and lightly cleaned out the stock, it was full of desert sand. It shoots very well. |
