Chapparal 2J - in the late 60s-early 70s this was an attempt to use a suction motor like a great big vacuum cleaner to hold the car to the road while racing.  It was mostly successful, but McLaren tried to get it declared illegal... or something like that... but was overturned.

IIRC it fucking DESTROYED other cars in tight tracks because it made full downforce at 0 MPH and was not reliant on wings and higher speeds like other cars were adopting.
