I'll try to keep this short:

Wife was driving her '06 Jeep Commander through a Target parking lot on the main drag through the lot when some hog of a woman in a clapped out Chevy Cavalier neglected to stop at the end of one of the parking aisles and T-boned the wife. Below are the results:

The totality of the damage to my untrained eye is: FP door, RP door, lower valance, RP wheel flair, rear bumper, trim, RP interior door panel, RP tire, and RP wheel (bent severely at the lip) and lower rocker.

I still can't figure out how the damage occurred. You can see the main hit to the passenger door. I'd estimate the wife's rate of speed at ~30 MPH and the other vehicle at probably 15-20 if she didn't stop (no skid marks, she "doesn't remember"). Perhaps the nose of her car hit the side of the jeep, spun her so her side contacted the rear of the jeep.

Am I correct in assuming all of the cosmetic stuff is just dollars but the damage to the rocker on a uni-body vehicle constitutes "frame damage"?

The Jeep is an '06 base model commander, 2wd, with 90K miles. We've recently been looking at upgrading. KBB put's the vehicles private sale value around $7K.

Does this accident force our hand at getting her into a different vehicle, or will they attempt to repair all of this?

Thanks.

Frame? May not be worth fixing.

eta, 2 wheel drive? Didn't know they made one.

At a 7k value with that frame area I am thinking it is going to be close.

I'd reckon totaled.  Someone hit my wife's car - just side swiped it driving down the street.  Damage was not as bad as yours.  $6700 to fix it.

I doubt that's totaled.  If the frame or some suspension parts were bent maybe.

ETA:  I didn't know they didn't have a full frame....  Wow.

Not unless the frame is effed.

The doors and bumper aren't an issue easy fix... the kick panel area most body shops can cut and weld in a new section. I'm only going off what i see though.

It's honestly going to be very close depending on damage to the b pillar and rocker.  I voted no, but it is possible that  you are going to be Totaled if you need a new b pillar and rocker welder in.  So no b pillar, you will probably be on the border.  New b pillar you are totaled.

My wife's 13 grand Cherokee had similar looking damage and the bill came out to $9000.  If you are near that number, that thing is way past totaled for an 06 commander.

about 10 years ago... i had a 1990 bronco. the drivers door got crunched just like that.   repair shops charged insurance $3000.00, ro replace the door, paint it, and put a new power mirror on it..... just the door..... on a truck worth maybe $4000.00

tough call. unibody, i'd call it totalled. body on frame, they'd probably fix it. but looking up the commander it seems to be some kind of mix of the 2.

Nah. With aftermarket parts I bet it comes to 3800-4500 bucks.

Probably be considered an economical total loss, basically cost more to fix than it's worth or the law will allow. Otherwise it could be fixed.

Irreparable op, there isn't a fab shop in the world that could fix that. Bolt that many new parts up and it wouldn't cheaper to just assemble a new car. Rip jeep

Nope.  $5000 dollar estimate is my guess.  If they do total it, buy it back and get it fixed on the cheap for a beater.

People are dumbasses. How the fuck can you be stupid enough to cause an accident in a parking lot? Sorry about your car.

The usual standard is loss of at least 75% of the pre-accident value.  Read your policy.

If there is frame damage then yes it probably will be totaled.  I'd buy it back personally and see about fixing it up.

Also listen closely to that wheel when driving to check for damaged wheel bearing or bent axle.

I know women and parking lots don't mix well, but any reason why your wife was cruising 30mph in the target parking lot?

Can't say I am baffled at the accident, people fly through all the aisles at our targets....mostly women on their phones

You left out any info on the other party....since it was private property did the cops even care?  What's the other lady claim?  Back pain and your wife hit her?

No airbag deployments? It depends on your insurance Co. standards if it a total or not.

30 MPH is smoking fast for a parking lot.

It's been a long time since I've had to have body work done, but I hit a deer with just damage to the driver's side door and front driver's panel and it was over $2500, so I would bet it's going to be pretty close on whether or not it's totalled.

Not really totalled, but don't be shocked if your insurance company would rather total it and pay you bluebook value, than paying bodyshop prices to fix it and deal with the inevitable fallout.

Based on what I'm seeing in the pictures, I'd say the Commander is totaled for sure. Insurance companies usually total out when the estimate surpasses 80% of vehicle value. If I were in your position, I would push to have it totaled out and don't forget to make sure the insurance company pays you for the unused portion of the taxes you paid when you first bought the vehicle which would be whatever % your state charges for sales tax on the amount paid out for the total loss.

Probably not. Be there when the adjuster comes. When he comes for the second time, because youre going to dispute the first estimate.

I was rear ended in what I thought was a minor accident in my 09' corolla.

Turned out to be several grand.

Have a body shop look at it, you might be surprised at the labor hours to fix something like that.

Otherwise your stuck with her. Sorry.

Unless jeep parts are somehow extra cheap, you're going to push right up to the 75% just with what we can see.

I'm an auto adjuster in Oklahoma.  What company is handling the claim?  Because maybe I shouldn't comment.  LOL

The total loss laws vary by state.  In Oklahoma, it's Actual Cash Value - salvage value.  It has nothing to do with a percentage of ACV.  Just based off the pics, I know several shops that would and could repair that rocker.  I'm not sure if it will be economical though.  If it's really a $7k car, I'm thinking it could be repaired just off the pics.

Well this has been an interesting experience...

After a couple of hours with the Jeep, the other woman's insurance company's body shop (who also came highly recommended via a couple of third party sources) determined there was $7,700 dollar worth of damage. It was initially around $6,500, but upon putting it on the frame rack it was determined that the rear axle tube was tweaked as a result of the rear tire being slashed and it falling on the rim while sliding sideways. I was happy to hear that, as it all but insured the Jeep would be totaled and we'd be able to get out from owning a vehicle with 100% of it's actual value being in repairs. Not so fast.

Her insurance called and had "great news" that they were going to repair the vehicle. I was puzzled, especially when they said it was because their perceived actual value was $12,800. When they sent me the comps they used to derive that value, some of the vehicles were newer, some lower miles, some with the Hemi engine, some leather, some dvd/navigation. It was a conglomeration of trucks nothing like ours and they were only the "asking" prices for vehicles up for sale at dealerships, not actual sold values. Anyway, after some pissing and moaning, come to find out this particular insurance carrier supposedly allows a person to petition to a higher level of agent for a total loss. I opted for that, and prepared myself for a month long battle. As it turned out, 5 minutes on the phone with a "specialist" and they offered not only their perceived value (12,800) but also taxes (~1,500) and some other small fees. Ultimately, they're going to retain ownership of the vehicle (it got me another ~4,000) and have already overnighted the check for $14,000. Amazingly enough, I paid just ~15K for the truck in 2009, when it had 50K miles less.

So for those of you who voted Yes, you win the internets.

Thanks for asking. Wife is good. Two little ones (3yo and 1yo) in the back were fine as well. It was pretty low speeds and not enough to deploy either vehicle's air bags.

ETA. HELL YES. I'm gonna go drive around parking lots all day. That's a helluva payout on that rig.

Yeah that much damage is definitely a total with that blue book. Glad everyone's ok.

My wife hit a dog with her new (2007, purchased in 2/15) mustang, on way home from dealer (owned car for about 2hrs)).  I think the car was $9000, the dog damage was $5000.  It took out the front bumper, hood, front quarter panel, and dented the door and rear quarter panel - big dog.  I felt that (cosmetic damage only) was closed to totaled as it was > 50% value of car.

Looks like they wanted to settle before you talked to a personal injury lawyer. expect your mail to get inundated with unsolicited offers warning about all kinds of injuries you didn't know about.

Glad to hear it. Known people to be in similar incidents and have aches and pains show up a week later. Never sign anything right away, related to an auto accident.
