Laughing at Microsoft MSFT +0.13%’s controversial data mining and privacy invasions within Windows 10? Well Windows 7 and Windows 8 users should laugh no longer as this most hated spying is now headed your way…

Software specialist site gHacks has discovered that Microsoft has pushed four new updates to both Windows 7 and Windows 8 which introduce new data collecting and user behaviour tracking features.

Already had the latest version of Ubuntu burned on a DVD. This will just push me to install it faster, as in tomorrow. I'm looking forward to using it again.

If there ever was a reason to prompt the adoption of a flavor of Linux, this would probably be the tipping point.

I'm sure there is a way...

Does anyone know what you need to do to run a Windows VM in Linux?

I chuckle because every time we have one of these threads everyone shouts Linux, but then other times it seems like the normal Arfcom member can't even use a web browser without help.

Anyone considering Linux should look at Elementary OS.

For the average user wanting to surf the web, watch movies, look at pictures, listen to music etc. Linux is a great alternative.

That said... how do you know your distribution of linux isn't similarly data mining?

Most don't, and never will.  All they'll do is read whatever scare story of the day is posted here and run around shouting "oh no!" and then say they'll do a bunch of stuff that they don't know how to do, and are to lazy if they do no how.  And the ones that do try will be back in a few days screaming for help because they trashed their PC.

And to the guy who posted the Apple logo?  Put down the koolaid and get a clue.

I just gave Win 7 it's own disk, the only thing I use it for is office and a flight sim, games and such.

I just switched over to Linux Mint, Cinnamon and running it as a duel boot. I have it loaded on a 16 GB thumb drive and if I want to run Linux I start it up and hit F-12 to select the USB boot order and it starts Linux from and on the thumb drive.
If I want to run Win XP I just turn it on and let it start normally.
You can run Linux from Windows in Virtual Box if you care too.

Linux Mint, Cinnamon version works very much just like Windows XP so there is a very shallow to no learning curve.
It's the best of both worlds and it's free, but they do accept donations.

I've always said, MS updates are not worth downloading.   People always find better and free ways to deal with software issues.  You do not need Microsofts bloatware.

I for one am in the process of switching to some form of Linux distro.

I was imagining this was going to be a matter of time.

My Win 7 is set to not auto-update and I screen what is installed.   It appears that I'll have to scrutinize more.

Just uninstalled them they go back to 5/2015 So it has been going on a while.

I'm going to look into a dual boot linux and play with it.

What flavor is most used / supported?

Ubuntu or some of the ubuntu-based ones seem to be the most user friendly.

Mint is a popular one.    Your choice of cinammon, xfce, or mate for interface.

I'm ok and I can google what i don't know. I have been using it but my experience is mostly my raspberry pi.

I played with ubuntu a few years ago. I liked it. but never planed to use it full time. Now I have changed my mind and want to get away from windows.  I never planed to upgrade to win 10 and its was just a matter of time anyway.

Raspi uses a version of Debian linux. Ubuntu is developed from Debian. I would pick either of them and go from there. Alternatively Linux Mint (from Ubuntu) probably has the best out of the box look and feel.

All 3 of those will be somewhat similar under the hood, it's what is bolted on top thats the difference. download all 3 and try them out in vmware player or virtualbox.

(Disclaimer: I'm only a casual user of linux mostly use Windows. take what I say with a grain of salt).

Oh and whatever you do, don't get the default Ubuntu Enlightenment UI. Use one of the "spins."

Until MS sneakily inserts them into some other stuff or a service pack.

This sucks and stinks.

Those are optional updates which won't install unless you are set to install all updates from microsoft.

Still fuck them.
