There are a lot of people who can't afford to have kids and, wisely, DON'T.
Unfortunately, these people are vastly outnumbered by the people who can't afford to have kids but do it anyway. |

Do I have kids? No. But I was raised by a man and woman who didn't have me until they were in their mid and early 30's, and already senior NCO's in the Air Force. I am 28, and while I have a great job, I am only about a year out of college, and IMO it is easier to make an argument that it is selfish to have kids before really establishing yourself than it is to say "it is selfish to not have kids." But hey, you can call, or anyone else that doesn't have kids, selfish. Because in my book, making assumptions about people you don't know behind a keyboard makes you douche. And I would rather be known as "selfish" than that. |

Most people don't need kids to be honest... I see more and more couples that are flat out immature in every facet of their lives popping kids out.
Me? I can't wait to have kids! I can't wait to be able to teach them how to drive my manual Jeep, tie a fishing hook, shoot a bow/gun, laugh at them on their first date, and just enjoy watching them grow and love life. My parents showed me what amazing people they are, so I want to give what I received to another generation. |

I never was the kind of person to get emotional at weddings until we went to the niece's. For some reason seeing my BIL walk her down the aisle and give her away hit me with the thought "You'll never get to do that" and it hit me that there are so many "normal" human experiences about having and raising kids I've never had and will never get to have. I thought I could deal with our not being able to have kids. But as time comes around to where we could be grandparents, I think that's hurting worse than not having kids. That's when the feeling of being a complete failure at the most basic function of all life on Earth hits. Don't reproduce, you've failed to pass on your unique traits and you are an evolutionary failure. Maybe it's age, or a sense of mortality due to health issues, but the pain of the "no kids emptiness" really does hit home and hurt deeply. I guess admitting failure adds to the hurt of no kids and makes it worse.
Hug those kids and love on them some extra for those of us who never got to. |
