Really he was farther down the social path than most of us. Society is moving in the direction of finding everything objectionable. If it continues on this trajectory it will be almost impossible to interact without someone choosing to take offence as everyone clamors for the elevated social status of victimhood.
Some countries have already created hate speech laws and we will end up with them too. As you can't really codify what constitutes hate speech it will be carte blanch to make anyone a criminal. Soon only people who have a claim of victimhood will have gravitas and relative immunity from victimizing others and prosecution under hate speech laws. We will literally be living in a world largely run by professional victims. |

When I was at the U of H back in the 80's I had a lot of trouble in Statistics. so I got to class early and sat near the front in the same chair every day.
I learned by failing twice that I could not just fuck off and get through this class so I wrote every word the teacher wrote and worked every problem the teacher did on the board. But the real story was one day late in the semester I walked into class and sat down> I was coughing when I sat down. a black guy behind me said I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN BY THAT I said WHAT? He said Again I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN BY THAT COUGH. I said well I wish you would tell me so we both know. He said YOU KNOW. People started looking I stood up and said Look buddy I don't know what the hell you are talking about but I will be glad to discuss it with you in the hall after class. I was shaking and starting to stutter a little which means it is almost fo time for me. I sat in front of him and went through class and after class he came up to me and said he was sorry he did not know what came over him. We shook hands and it was over. He did not even know how close it came or the fact that I was carrying that day. |

I've met people that have flown off the handle at similar words. I shrug it off and tell them to grow up.
The media has conditioned people to be this sensitive about racial issues. I mean, for the white folks in here, is there any of you that can't recall a situation where someone said "black people/person" in a hushed voice because they didn't want to be considered racist even though the comment was completely devoid of any bigoted intent? Sometimes you have to use a descriptor, and someone's skin color is a pretty good one when someone is uncertain of who you're talking about. |
