It is at my house.

I never answer the phone after 8.

My wife's relatives call at all hours, which pisses me off, but they don't seem to care.

I have the same problem.
My mother in law calls at all hours even after 11. First time she did it ,while my wife was talking to her I was looking up bereavement discounts for flights to Florida. Turns out she just wanted to chat, told my wife that ain't right to be calling that late to just chat.

You know not everyone is lucky enough to have a daylight job and their schedule may not reflect what is considered "normal".

I understand, as I work shift work...however I do not expect the world to revolve around my "odd" hours, nor do I disregard proper manners just because it suits me. If I am making a phone call between 9pm (6pm for business, and maybe 7-8pm to a household i know has small kids or has to be up relativly early in the morning) and 8am its an emergency.

I got a sprained ankle one time and went see the doctor about it.

A day later or so we got a phone call after 9 pm, and he said he was doctor so-and-so, and wanted to discuss the xray results and such.

My wife and i went into shock, and I finally asked "what is wrong?"  Oh, nothing much, he said.

The doctor said his wife does not let him phone after 7 pm, but as she was out for the evening, he could call patients at any time he pleased.  Just a touch of Asberger's here.

It depends on the person and the typical job schedule.  Around here, one doesn't call after 9.

The guy is calling your business's dedicated line? And he has both money and a willingness to spend it? And you are upset with that?

And your complaining? A 2 minute call to tell him you'd call him the next day would have solved the problem and probably helped secure a job.

That is an unknown at this point.

Lots of people get into a big rush to get a project done, then back pedal when they see the real numbers.

I get told at least a few times a month how much something "should" cost.

I'll never be w/o a landline. And if you ever have to live through a major disaster you probably wont either.

They're too cheap nowadays to do without.

I got a message from a person wanting me to look at a job at some point today, I didn't have a chance to return the call before this evening because we didn't get home until around 8 so I planned on it in the morning.

At quarter to nine the landline rings and it's the same guy, of course I don't pick it up, we are relaxing and getting ready for bed.

And of course he leaves a message saying he has tried me twice already...in the course of a day.

Having done this long enough I already know this is the type of person that gets the estimate padded to compensate for being a pain in the butt.

I was raised to not call people after 8pm unless it's family or close friends, and only then if it was important. Who the hell calls a contractor at almost 9pm?

An imbecile. Eject. Really. If he pisses you off now, imagine what an asshat he will be, half way through the project.

The guy was probably unaware of your family's rule.

Before 9:00 is okay in my book.  Family and friends can call me before 10:00.  Wife and kids can call any time.  Outside of that, I assume something is seriously wrong.

No good reason for business calls after 6:00pm.  If you run a 24/7 operation, then someone should handle the after hour calls.

Personal calls, I'm good up to about 10:00pm, but still screen my calls.

I'm sure this guy will expect 24/7 service from you.  I worked for a guy notorious for calling people at all times of the day, he can't get a local contractor to return any of his calls.

I'd give him a courtesy call and about 2 minutes of my time to explain what he needs and why the 1st contractor bailed.  Then decide if it will be a padded estimate or decline with, "I don't want to be liable for the 1st guys screw ups."

May not be as bad as you think and could lead to better business in the future.

Great point.

Generally speaking, if a company can't make it between the hours of 7am to 7 pm, they need to find another line of work.

This:

My career was spent in a heavy mechanical service industry.  I was hungry and I took calls
LITERALLY 24/7.

I can't even tell you how many times I schlumped out of bed at 2:00 AM for service work.

I did that for nearly 30 years.

Now I'm in a more "relaxed" business.  I still get emergency calls at 2 AM but they are much
more infrequent.

If you want to get ahead...... take the calls.

My father went ballistic at anyone who called for me past 8.
There was only one exception--death calls.  I got two of those in college and he was literally on the line when I was told someone died that evening.
