Harlan?

Nope.  Getting colder.  Calling Harlan KY you might as well call me Ky and I spent 40 years in VA before moving here.

Guess I will have to throw out another hint that should nail it down.

Looks like it could be the tipple near Raven.

Clues? Is it between Hindman, Garrett and Beaver?

Yeah, I am relatively familiar with the area.

Parts of KY and WV are very much like the Middle East.

You have extremely uneducated people that live in tribe like social groups led by old men with beards who cling to a very fundamental understanding of their religion while not following that religion very well and resorting to violence quickly when they feel threatened.

We come from Pike county - Boldman / Harold. My fondest childhood memories are of fishing in the big sandy and hanging off the old Boldman swinging bridge. Not a better bunch of people on the planet, if ya ask me. Papaw was a coal miner and the family grew up poor. Every single one of his 12 kids graduated high school which was a feat in those times. They didn't have anything but each other and, because of that, I have the closest family any of my friends have ever been around. When I graduated from high school relatives from 7 different states attended. Just this past weekend I had relatives from Arkansas, southern Illinois, Kentucky, California, and Oklahoma at my house simply because we decided it had been too long since we had all been together. Will see a bunch of them again in October.

My family has always been rich.......even if their bank accounts haven't always been very large

ETA - is the pic from Daniel Boone state park?

Yep. Scott county, Clay county and Unicoi county, TN match that description to a T.

If I don't know you I probably should. Good times for sure. I have not been back to the area in 10 or 12 years. I miss the scenery and the lifestyle but I don't like being broke.

You probably do, hell we're probably cousins somehow. I'm stuck in exactly the opposite situation. I escaped for a few years but when the economy took a shit in 08 I had to come back. In the Northern Bell Co area right now. No jobs whatsoever. Obama has nearly finished off the mines which were already going downhill. I got a buddy that runs a Pilot in the area and when they put a 'cashier needed' sign up one night they went through all 100 applications they had printed by the next morning. I got another buddy that went from making 30/hr as an electrician underground to driving a forklift in a factory an hour away for 10/hr. It's worse than you remember I can tell you that.

Hazard and the surrounding areas are something "different". Family was from Sand Gap and McKee back in the day. I was the first member of our family born up north in Indiana.
