Still plugging along on my 2008 Macbook. Replaced 5400 HD with an SSD. It runs fast without issue. I could upgrade to more ram, but at this point, I'll put the money into a Skylake 15" rMBP when they come around. Can't argue with nearly 7 years of flawless service.
Some of the arguments crack me up. On paper will Mac win every price to spec ratio or benchmark? No. But for me at least, the OS is so much cleaner and user friendly than Windows. So for me, the build quality of the hardware and the GUI of the OS are important along with the specs. The other thing that I see as a positive that everybody else seems to harp on is the "locked down" ecosystem. Apple limits their OS to their hardware. Guess what, they can ensure a cleaner experience and don't have to worry about 50 different manufacturers using shitty, mismatched hardware that makes their OS run terrible. |
|
[#3]
I'd rather have the flexibility to use the 50 different products. Not all of them are shitty, or the market would eliminate them. I don't mind investing time/thought into my PCs, it's sort of a hobby in a way, I just don't want the parts to cost a damn fortune. About 1% of the reason that Apple keeps some things proprietary is to ward off compatibility issues. The other 99% is about them making $$$$$$. I don't begrudge them making a profit, I'm just not interested in throwing my money onto that heap if I don't have to. I have other places to put my $.

I will probably go to 10 eventually. But I don't mind 8.1. Classic shell resolves 99% of the issues people have with 8 and it takes like a minute to install. Gee, really tough. I do the same thing with phones. The very first thing I do when I get a new android phone is root it and install nova launcher. Solves every issue anyone ever had with manufacturer's "skins" being crappy.

Most Apple users don't really know why they buy Apple. It's trendy, it looks nice, and has a high price tag. These people are sacrificing money for more important things (like a mortgage, paying down debt, etc.) for having a fancy laptop that they will never fully utilize. But they get to tweet about it and be all clicky with the other Mac users. These people also prefer to shop at Whole Foods and Pottery Barn, because if it's that expensive it must be the best that money can buy.
I buy last-gen Lenovo T-series laptops for myself. They are business-class laptops and seem to last 5 years of my heavy use. They aren't pretty, and aren't overly elegant like a Mac. But I pay on average $500 for them, throw in an big HD (now SSD) and max out the memory and am done. Right now I'm on my second laptop since 2007 and have spent a total of under $1500 on them. |

I recently made the switch (in February) from a PC to Macbook Air. I did it because at work they use iMacs. I can honestly say, I don't think I'll be buying a PC again for myself.
If you haven't already bought one, I waited until they announced the new models and Best Buy was selling the old ones at a discount (the upgrade of specs to the new model was minimal). I got one of the mover's coupons in the USPS movers packet and took an additional 10% off. Laptop went from 999 to 799 to 719 OTD (yay Delaware Tax Free)! YMMV. |

One thing that is often overlooked, when buying anything Mac, you are buying the support you get from Apple.
The Apple store and ability to access their resources should you have any issues is something I have not found when using other computers. Case in point (albeit smaller), an acquaintance of mine from college had an issue with their Acer in that the charging unit broke. All local stores didn't carry that specific charging unit in stock. She had to contact a special supplier with a unique part number for the charger for her specific laptop and have it shipped to her in order to finish her essay. That is simply not the case with Apple. You can walk into any store or go on to their website and order the charger directly. Also, they genius bar is great for helping anyone with issues revolving around their products. |

Sure about that? http://www.cnet.com/news/lenovo-hit-by-lawsuit-over-superfish-adware/ The Chinese PC maker has found itself in hot water following last week's revelations that many of its PCs include a software program called Superfish Visual Discovery. Considered either adware or spyware, Superfish tracks your Web searches and browsing activity to place additional ads on the sites you visit. But the software also installs its own root certificate that leaves affected PCs more vulnerable to malware attacks. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/08/12/lenovo_firmware_nasty// Analysis Lenovo has sold laptops bundled with unremovable software that features a bonus exploitable security vulnerability. If the crapware is deleted, or the hard drive wiped and Windows reinstalled from scratch, the laptop's firmware will quietly and automatically reinstall Lenovo's software on the next boot-up. Built into the firmware on the laptops' motherboard is a piece of code called the Lenovo Service Engine (LSE). If Windows is installed, the LSE is executed before the Microsoft operating system is launched. The LSE makes sure C:\Windows\system32\autochk.exe is Lenovo's variant of the autochk.exe file; if Microsoft's official version is there, it is moved out of the way and replaced. The executable is run during startup, and is supposed to check the computer's file system to make sure it's free of any corruption. Lenovo's variant of this system file ensures LenovoUpdate.exe and LenovoCheck.exe are present in the operating system's system32 directory, and if not, it will copy the executables into that directory during boot up. So if you uninstall or delete these programs, the LSE in the firmware will bring them back during the next power-on or reboot. |
