As for the details, that is what makes something like this fun.  Too few details just ends up being boring.  The overall shape will be the real bitch, but if we can get some good cross-section pictures, I think we can do this justice.  It will not be perfect, but it should look pretty cool.

I'm not sure I can find a PG version of Das Boot, but I'd love to have the students watch it at the end.

You're going to have enough trouble building that thing in that size and have it structurally sound. The details will be a big pain in the ass and you'll likely have to skimp to get it done.

Here is a historically significant vessel that has easier lines.

The U.S.S. George Washington .

Wouldn't worry about that. Them airdales have a hard enough time finding a nuke boat, never mind a diesel boat on a battery.

My school did nothing of the sort either.  My high school was shitty, we had a huge drop off in the quality of education once we hit 9th-10th.

Looking forward to this thread.

I had one, not quite this epic, but he's the only teacher whose name I really remember, Mr. Hathaway.

he was the teacher for my WWII class (elective), he was a PBY Catalina pilot in WWII,says his only action was manually dropping some bombs on an island in the Aleutian chain killing some chickens.

He had us read very cool books, brought in a lot of cool WWII stuff in, and a quitar to play and sing songs from WWII era.

He would give us extra credit for doing models of WWII planes which he hang from the ceiling in the class room.

Assuming they could even find it. Usually shooting a flare helped them see.

I tracked an Ohio on a couple cheap ones that we just tossed over the side... not the Cadillacs that P-3s spit.  They find stuff.  A couple bubbleheads were waiting on the pier when we got in port - they ran off with our sonar tapes.

We have an autographed photo of that boat in the office.  I briefly considered doing a model of it, but the shape is pretty boring and I worried there weren't enough details to keep the kids busy.

My son doing work today on the plastic model.  I've never gotten him to build one before, but he said it was really fun.  No shit......dad was right.

He's going to scan this tomorrow and try to get just the hull 3D imaged.  Notice the center sections that he traced and also photographed so we could use them for possible stencils later.

Once your U Boat takes shape, you ought to have a couple of the students write to the boat about the project and include a picture of what you are doing.  And that you are thinking about them as you build it.  I bet the crew of SSBN 742 would love it.

Could do the same thing with USS Cheyenne also

I'm a little pumped to see this thing progress!

Myself, I've been fascinated with the British K-class submarines.

K is for Katastrophe

From their first appearance in mid-World War I, the Royal Navy’s K-class submarines were perhaps the most badly-conceived and ill-starred submersibles ever built by any nation. In both their original configuration and in the several derivatives that followed, the K-boats compiled an almost unbroken record of disaster and death, unredeemed by even a single instance of combat effectiveness...

Any chance a German sub, of this make/model was captured?  Maybe you could 're-badge' it with the story of the capture included?
