Pretty good summary. Bread and circuses. These inconsequential "news" stories aren't really news in the sense that they should be given national attention. The media outlets need to create a crisis to boost their ratings.  The higher the ratings, the more money you can charge for advertising space, think Super Bowl.

You also have the real news existing below the surface, that the average Joe Six-Pack were made aware of, there would be a return tar and feathers and lynching on the White House lawn.
