Ten federal agents will join the Baltimore police homicide unit, commanders announced Sunday, after the city followed its deadliest month in decades with a night in which 10 people were shot — seven of them in one incident.

Interim Police Commissioner Kevin Davis said the addition of the special agents from the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Agency, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the U.S. Marshals Service and the U.S. Secret Service represent a "flipping of the script of sorts."

"That's a bit unusual because local police departments — and Baltimore is no different — historically send detectives to federal law enforcement agencies to embed with their long-term investigations," he said.

The department's homicide clearance rate is 36 percent. Davis said the agents will use federal resources to help homicide detectives solve killings.
...

A spokesman for Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake called the move to bring in federal agents "exactly the kind of all-hands-on-deck approach that the mayor has been calling for."

"It's clear that the relationships that Commissioner Davis brings to the position, as well as his creative approach toenhanced collaboration and cooperation withour various federal, state and local law enforcement partners, are boosting our efforts," spokesman Howard Libit said in a statement. "Asthe policecontinue to work with community members who are increasingly calling in tips, the mayor is confident that together we will bring the violence under control."

I've got a better proposition:

1. Accumulate the salaries of all agents combined.
2. Buy the maximum quantity of firearms you're able to with that monetary amount.
3. Dump said firearms into random areas of the Baltimore neighborhood.
4. ?????
5. Profit.

you don't put the feds with the homicide unit, that will do nothing to STOP the violence. The homicide unit comes out after the fact.

Put together a street task force with feds on it, reap the financial/equipement benefits of having feds on it (feds suck balls as street cops and more often as not as desk cops too but they bring money and fun toys).

We did a similar thing back in the mid 90's-early 2000's. Had guys from my dept, sheriff dept, state police, fbi and atf. At the outset we had fed indictments on over 100 crips and bloods with 90% copping pleas with minimum sentences of 40years or more. dont think any of them actually went to trial, a couple turned states witness and a couple died in jail awaiting trial. Totally shut down gangs in our county until recently.  Ours spun out of the gang shooting of 5 deputies on one scene.

If you can't get it done all at once, you do it piecemeal.    incremental fundamental change.  If it is worth doing, it is  worth doing  on the Federal level. Historically speaking it is the progressive way.

that's the way it works, the progressive/liberal/ democrat/commies gain control run a city into the ground and then send the federal LEOs in to correct the problem using progressive/liberal/democrat/commie tactics.

My first thought was that the purpose for putting Feds into the situation is to observe the local police to see if they are letting things go. There has been a lot of talk about police hitting back at the way they have been treated by doing the "smile and wave" routine and letting things play out. Maybe they think the homicide cops aren't as eager as they should be to see murder rates go down.

In any event the reason they are being sent is because the rise in homicides in Baltimore has become politically embarrassing and because it was predicted.

Oh, no..it WILL help. You can be goddamned sure of that. Because some important somebodies have careers on the line. This is politics...optics.

If it was about actually doing something about crime it would have been done quietly...but it isn't being done quietly so you can be sure it's about politics.

And everyone is going to stay mum about the core reality that actually putting a dent in Baltimore's crime rate will take putting a bunch of young black men in prison for a long time. #BlackLivesMatter! Unless the murder rate makes politicians look bad.

wrong, all it takes is the mayor, the AG, the chief prosecutor, and the new chief of police to invite all the thugs (yeah I meant to say thugs) over to city hall and have a sit down to sing Cumbayá anything else would be racist.

I would say that those officers that are assigned with one of the feds should probably be wearing a body cam that records the whole shift. To avoid any "differences of viewpoint" if something does hit the fan. For self preservation because as was pointed out the DOJ will toss the locals under the bus in a heartbeat.
