Man that is rough, you gave him a good home for as long as he could stick around, hope you and your family are doing ok.

Fuck. Poor pup.
At least you gave him a good place in the end and he didn't leave starving and unloved. |

Damn, I'm sorry to hear that. At least he got to know and experience some love and protection before he passed.
It's always worth it even if it's for short time. |

Noooo, damn this sucks. I'm choked up on this, not going to lie.
You gave him the best chance at life and made him happy all the way until the end. RIP Ditch |

Sorry for your loss......at least his last days were comfortable.

Awww, man...my heart just dropped upon hearing this. Poor Ditch. Take solace that he knew love and had a few happy days with you. I have four dogs, two of whom were rescued. Love them all and I can imagine your pain.
RIP Ditch. |

joker, you're an incredible man and I know you did everything you possibly could. My wife and I can never thank you enough.
The family and I are just beside ourselves, we had such hope and excitement for our new family member. RIP Ditch, we loved you. I'll talk to you again soon joker. |

I'm sorry Joker.
You gave him the best days of his life though. Dog threads always get me. |

Distemper sucks ass.
At least you make his last days happy and he felt loved. Look at the transformation in those pics, in the last ones you can see he's smiling. |

What a sweet face. I am glad he had some good love and play time before he left this earth. Good on ya for taking him in.
My girl is on antibiotics for a UTI. It was so hard at first watching her panic about the pain and not understanding. She would curl up and put her head in my lap. Thankfully the meds worked pretty fast. Dogs can really get you right in the heart. |

Sorry he didn't make it you gave him all you could it just wasn't to be. You are a fantastic human being.

Horrible news. Was loving watching his progress in this thread. Glad he got to be loved before he went

Damn! I thought you had this. Thank you for giving Ditch a quality life at the end.
I've had dogs all my life, but I'm very ignorant about distemper. Reading about it on wiki it's a truley horrible disease. It seems that the virus is very persistent, I hope your other buddies are ok! Just cleaning up and safeing the areas Ditch was in sounds daunting. |

I pulled these phrases off of a vet info page:
"If they perk up and begin wagging their tails the angels have spared them. The exceptions are the cases in which damage to the brain is delayed for up to three months. For some reason, these tend to be dogs with long noses and faces like collies and german shepherd types. These delayed cases may show no respiratory or intestinal signs before delayed nerve damage occurs. " "Once dogs develop nervous system signs we have no effective treatment." "Some dogs become blind during the course of the disease as the virus attacks the retina." |

You sir are a true hero to that dog and to me.
Feel comfort in knowing you gave joy to a dog who would have never known it otherwise. |

So sorry for your loss joker 1. But you did all you could to save a poor pup. In his last days, Ditch got to know love and safety which is priceless. Do not lose heart joker 1. You are a good man

Sounds like you were there for Ditch when he needed you most, so he could share love and be cared for before the end. |
|
[#39]
I have seen similar stories many times with those who rescue and take in the toughest cases.
I have come to believe that even when they do not survive long, they have received the gift of being cared for and feeling the comfort of a loving home and someone who cares about them. You gave him love, happiness, and joy. I'm sorry it wasn't for a longer time, but you still did a great thing. |

I have terrible news. Ditch died this morning at 5:45 AM. After a great day (see pics) I let the dogs out one last time at 12:30 AM. Ditch was energetic and playful making sure to attack at least 2 other dogs on the way out the door. He was sleeping in my arms when he awoke at 3:30 AM and vomited. He then closed his eyes and laid down. By the time I cleaned that up the diarrhea and drooling started. I took him out and he looked very wobbly. By the type I googled the emergency vet location he was starting to seize. I drove him to Medvet in Cincinnati. His temp was 105' and his pupils were fixed. The diagnosis was a neurological case of distemper that he caught in the wild. While crying herself the vet told me there was almost no chance of him ever recovering from this. I made the tough call. I'm sorry. I did my best. I can't believe I lost him. These pics are from earlier in the day. http://i365.photobucket.com/albums/oo93/markfhagenauer/DSCF4784.jpg http://i365.photobucket.com/albums/oo93/markfhagenauer/DSCF4781.jpg http://i365.photobucket.com/albums/oo93/markfhagenauer/DSCF4780.jpg http://i365.photobucket.com/albums/oo93/markfhagenauer/DSCF4779.jpg http://i365.photobucket.com/albums/oo93/markfhagenauer/DSCF4778.jpg http://i365.photobucket.com/albums/oo93/markfhagenauer/DSCF4776.jpg http://i365.photobucket.com/albums/oo93/markfhagenauer/DSCF4773.jpg http://i365.photobucket.com/albums/oo93/markfhagenauer/DSCF4777_1.jpg View Quote I can not believe this that is really sad but at least he had a few nice moments with a person that gave him love and care. That sucks
At least he enjoyed his last days. I'm sure it's been said, but get your dogs checked out and ensure their vaccines are up to date ASAP. Keep an eye on them too. Distemper is highly contagious. |
