Thank you for saving this Dog. As I said in the other thread, the broken spirit of a German Shepherd is something that is very difficult for me to see. I can't explain it, it is just something that eats me up inside Again thank you for saving him

Awesome stuff folks! Sure is refreshing to hear good news for a change. I passed Cody's info to my wife who passed it to a local rescue (Yellow Rose). Don't know if they had a hand in any of it but they seem to be good people.

Here's the girl I picked up today
Surprise penis! Yep, this girl is a boy. The skinniest I've ever seen. He kept collapsing so I tossed him in the car and drove 1 1/2 hours straight to a vet.
Skinniest dog the vet ever saw. The vet tech ran out the room and was sodding. He had much water and a light snack while on his belly.
Next he got a thorough physical exam, blood and stool sample taken, IV antibiotics, wormed and 200 ticks pulled off of him. He is estimated to be ~7 months. He weighs 31.6 pounds but should be ~50.
They said he was okay to take home and agreed with my rehab plan. They'll see him in 2 weeks.

Here he looks pretty good. He's ready for a car ride to a new life.
http://i365.photobucket.com/albums/oo93/markfhagenauer/Semper%20Fi/DSCF4703.jpg

Then he melted a little.
http://i365.photobucket.com/albums/oo93/markfhagenauer/Semper%20Fi/SF%20ditch.jpg
Look at that shoulder.
http://i365.photobucket.com/albums/oo93/markfhagenauer/Semper%20Fi/DSCF4702.jpg

Here is where he flopped when I lifted him out of the car. At this point he couldn't get to his feet on his own.
http://i365.photobucket.com/albums/oo93/markfhagenauer/Semper%20Fi/DSCF4707.jpg

I set him on his feet and he tried to follow me. Yes, that is his spine.
http://i365.photobucket.com/albums/oo93/markfhagenauer/Semper%20Fi/DSCF4704.jpg

The spirit was willing, the body was weak. I of course carried him in.
http://i365.photobucket.com/albums/oo93/markfhagenauer/Semper%20Fi/DSCF4708.jpg

In his energy conserving confinement he enjoy a little chicken and veggies with a delicious Panacur gravy.

He looks beautiful, I love him already and can't wait to see him. The family is so excited.

Like I said joker, please let me know everything you spend on him to get him well for us and I will be sure we cover it all. Again, thanks so much!

Every time I read one of Joker's threads I am reminded that there are many good people out there - and way too many animal abusers still breathing.

I lost the smartest dog I have ever had today at 12:15.  She took her last breath in my arms.

We rescued her from a kill shelter 14 years ago on her last day - they still had the balls to charge us & place all sorts of conditions on her release.  The joke was on them. She had a great life, and beat everything but oseteoscarcoma. Rest in Peace old girl.

It will be a while before I can think about another dog.  But I will keep Semper Fi at the top of my list when I am ready.  Thanks for all you do.

Sorry to hear that, Lem.

I went about 5 weeks after I took in my 14yr old GSD in for partial paralysis.   I just couldn't sleep without a dog to watch my back.   Got my Shebah-Sue as a rescue.

Ditch is doing great!

Last night after the Cane Corso left he finally got to meet all my dogs. He was a little nervous but my guys wouldn't react to him and he settled in.

He slept on the floor with me for an hour before waking me to go out. Oddly he appears housebroken. The rest of the night he spent in the crate and slept well.

He now is never more than 3 feet from me. He stands and leans against ne licking my hand. He's been eating well and drinking well. He's been urinating. He's gaining strength. Walking better even up and down steps (Just 4 of them.) This AM he stood on his hind legs so he could put his front legs on my lap. Amazing for a dog that couldn't get to his feet yesterday afternoon. I'm working on his food aggression (C'mon, he's literally starving.)
His dog aggression, which is mild and non violent, is also doing better. I think much more about his chances for a full recovery this morning.

And as I finished typing this he managed to get more than 3 feet from me. This is now a poop thread! He just took his fist dump. At least he hit the linoleum.

How can he be so adorably cute in spite of being so shockingly thin? I think it's his cute puppy ears, one is still floppy, and both are still a bit too big for him.

Glad to see he is in good hands. You got yourself a new shadow!

My girlfriend and I took a rescue GSD (male) a couple of months back in a very similar condition.

He was super skinny, stunk and afraid. He latched on to my girlfriend a little more than he did me. He thinks he is her bodyguard.

I'll post the before and current pics in here later.

So Joker, I don't know if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that Shepherds can be a little clingy. Your new charge...do you think he'll have separation anxiety? Is there a way of training a dog like this who has perfectly valid reasons to have separation anxiety to help them adjust mentally?

My dog is only part shepherd and he's like velcro all the time. Follows me EVERYWHERE. Trips me up, scampers away, comes back when the coast is clear...

He is glued to me. He's so ill I can't do anything to stress him right now. As he gets stronger he'll learn more.

Like with every other thing I've taught every other dog I'll make it up as I go. I envision letting him bond with my dogs and letting him wander with them as we walk around the property. Hopefully he'll be curious and want to explore with his buddies and separate from me a bit. When that doesn't work I'll try something else.

Thanks Joker for saving him. I just found this thread a few minutes ago and it and I went from tearful at the beginning to happy at the last update.

GSDs are pretty much bonded to one person and they may explore away from you (or the bond) for a little while but they'll keep an eye on you from afar.

Great dogs. I've had most breeds but I always seem to prefer shepherds.

Kudos again!

Here's a few pics of my GSD "Atticus" and my golden retreiver "Jazz" at Bear Butte Lake (near Sturgis SD) back in May with the wife & daughter trying out their new kayaks. They're keeping a close eye on the ladies and really wanted to swim out there and climb in.

Amazing how he has more energy in just one day of getting a good meal, water, and a safe place to sleep.

He looks like he is afraid and for good reason, that if you get out of his sight you may leave him and he will be on his own again.

Beautiful pup, this made my day much better with this update.Cant wait to see the progression over time.

I know! I'm feeling impatient already. I want to see his "after" picture!!!

I'm not sure if it was his energy reserves or his electrolytes but he was so uncoordinated once I got him home he was missing the food with his mouth! I really felt he was nearing unrecoverable. Consuming 64 oz of water (13% of his body weight) before he urinated means he was pretty dehydrated as well.

He is definitely terrified of being left again. He doesn't understand the promise I made him, "You are safe now and I'll never let anyone hurt you again."
He won't go through a doorway without me. He wants to be on the same side of the threshold and will circle me frantically if I stand in the doorway. I think he wants to be sure he stays on the same side of the door. It will be an issue to deal with when he's healthier.

Semper Fi Dog Rescue-

"Adopt a dog, get a FREE penis!"

Really ought to name him Dickie you know.

Joker1, I know it tears your heart out when you find these dogs, and some of them rip it right out again when it's time for them to go.

Ditch looks like it's going to be real hard to say goodbye, for him too.

But what a wonderful thing it is you do

How long do you estimate for him to be at the correct weight and health for his age and build?

At least a month or more as im assuming his recovery needs to be taken slow and watched closely?

GSD's are very much "pack" animals and prefer the company of the pack or family (you and yours) and most don't tolerate being left alone or behind while growing up.

They are very intelligent and hopefully he will learn that being separated from you, for whatever amount of time, isn't the end of the world.

At least a month or more as im assuming his recovery needs to be taken slow and watched closely?

Amazing how he has more energy in just one day of getting a good meal, water, and a safe place to sleep.

He looks like he is afraid and for good reason, that if you get out of his sight you may leave him and he will be on his own again.

Beautiful pup, this made my day much better with this update.Cant wait to see the progression over time.

Thank you

I'm not sure how long. This is new territory for me. All I've dealt with before is "really skinny" This boy is beyond that. He really is much worse than his pics. His sickly fur although thin is about 2" long and stands out from his body making him look fatter than he is. He gets a bath tonight. Maybe that'll show the real story.

I'm thinking at least a month to get healthy. Longer than that to be normal.

Yes, slow is key. He doesn't just have to gain weight. He has to rebuild all the muscle disuse that has been consumed. I'm sure that will take time.

We rescued a red lab about 3 years ago in very similar shape. It took him about 6 weeks to be up to where he should be for his age. It was a slow but rewarding process.

I will be ecstatic if I can get him to normal in just 6 weeks.

I think threads like this are why it is hard to like people in general. But then I remember that there are members like ours all over the country. Thankfully these dogs are safe.

2 pics from yesterday that were stuck in my camera:

Rescue selfie!

Here's the tech that broke down and cried when she saw Ditch. This is on the way out an hour later and she was still a little puffy.

When Ditch gets fully recovered you should stop by and show the tech the transformation of a healthy Ditch.Im sure she would appreciate that and make her feel better that he made it

They both look sad in that pic

We are really excited. The wife asks me at least 4-5 times a day now if I heard anything new or if there are more pics. I know joker is working his magic and it will be a while longer but I can't wait to see him.

I called her today to let her know Ditch was pretty much out of danger. I'll see her again in 2 weeks for the vaccines she was to weak to receive this visit. I know she'll be happy.
