I was calling Alligator processors today to find out which ones near me were 24 hours.  The one I'm probably going to with is about 20-30 minutes from my house.  They told me if I didn't want to drive all the way to them that I drop my gators I to a drop box that's near my house.  They said I just need to fill in the paperwork telling them what I want them to do, and drop the gators into the box.

I assume that it's not like a UPS dropbox with a slot, but some type of refrigeration unit, but I'm having a hard time picturing how something like this works without some idiot stealing the gator.

Must be a pretty big mail box if it can handle multiple 9 to 12 foot gators.

I must not be understanding this correctly. A real life alligator? Why are you dropping it in a box?

That's nothing, you should see how much postage is required.

The processor has drop boxes where you can store the gator until the come out and pick them up to be taken in for processing.  They butcher the gator, and package the meat, and salt the hide.  I need the hide prepped properly so I can sell it.

I drove by the address it's listed at, and found a steel building.  I'm assuming that is what it is, but I'm not positive.

Hmmmm, you sell these game hides?  Interdasting.  Alligator is an exemption.

Why is it, every time I think I've seen or heard it all, it's someone from Florida who proves me wrong.

You know, I'm not sure if it's legal or not. I know they can be killed if they're a danger. But really only east Texas has a sizable population of the things. I think there may be a permit for them though.

I know they've been found pretty damn far up the Brazos and Colorado rivers though.

And it makes me laugh because I pick up several drop boxes every night and the thought of opening one and a folded up dead gator in there just tickles me to death!!

There's similar things here in pa for deer, but usually on the processors premises.  One would kill a deer, gut it, then take it to the processors, where you would fill out an order form, then just toss it in a separate outdoor freezer, or if cold enough, a shed or garage of sorts.  I'd imagine that a big enough outfit, without much local competition, would benefit from off site drop boxes.

I rarely see Gators here, and I hunt about an hour SW of Houston.

Soo..  At this point we still don't have pictures of gator drop boxes, descriptions of them or even anyone who knows what they are??
That is very unlike arfcom.   Call the processor and get us more info!   Then send me some gator meat. I've never eaten one and it sounds delicious.

Florida Man arrested after allegedly stuffing dead alligators into a local pharmacy's mail slot. The man claimed he thought they were an "alligator drop box." Police report the man tested positive for bath salts, and was naked and covered in what is described as "reptile semen" at the time of the arrest.

A lot at Choke Canyon.  A few at Lake Corpus Christi. The Sinton Golf course used to have one on one of the water hazards.
I ran over one in the road near Whitsett.

Yes to hunting.  There is a season and protocol,  I plan to sign my oldest girl up for a drawn hunt.  I'm SE of Houston and we have tons of them.  Biguns, too.  Had a 4'er in the ditch in my yard a few years ago.

Have you considered processing it yourself? I only found one processor up here in Jax when researching for the season which leads me to think it’s not too hard to DIY.
