The Broncos defense was great this season, but some people are taking the praise a bit too far comparing them to the 85 Bears.

if you want to do a direct comparative, you need to normalize your data.

that's a fancy way of saying that there have been a shitload of rule changes favoring the offense in the last 30 years.  best to compare variations from the league average.  for example, in 1985, 12 teams (almost half the league back then) finished with less than 320ypg.  in 2015, only 3 did.  the 1985 #2 offense (SF) would have finished #11 in 2015...right behind the new york jets.

i think that the evolution of offensive schemes and the consistent offensive bias in rule changes offset the 25ypg difference.  there was no 'tackle box' for a QB to avoid sacks in '85.  secondary players were much, much more physical with receivers.  there were no 'defenseless player' rules.  and, of course, the bears weren't flipping between a broken-down QB and his zero-experience backup either, and they had the best rushing attack in the league.

i'm not arguing that DEN was the greatest or anything, just that the analysis in the pic is so shallow as to be worthless.

It was just a meme I found interesting.  I wasn't writing a thesis on the topic, but let's compare some numbers of some defenses in the past 15 years.

2015 Broncos:  Int: 14. FF: 22 Opp PPG: 18.5. Shutouts: 0

2013 Seahawks: Int: 28. FF: 24. Opp PPG: 14.4. Shutouts: 1.

2000 Ravens: Int: 23. FF: 19. Opp PPG: 10.3. Shutouts: 4.

again, raw numbers comparison is too shallow to draw any useful assessments.  DEN QBs threw 23 INTs in 2015.  in 2013, wilson threw 9.  2015 DEN rushing game was 17th.  2013 SEA rushing game was 4th.  think that might have made a bit of difference in terms of defensive performance?

your meme said they had 64 takeaways.  here it says 43.

interestingly,  CHI '85 and DEN '15 gave up exactly the same yards per play: 4.4.

You can turn it into percentages or per play to get a better idea.

2015 Broncos:
4.4 yards per play
1 INT every 40.9 pass attempts
1 fumble recovery every 75 total plays

1 turnover total per 36 plays
Gave up .30 points per snap
1 sack for every 11 pass attempts

2013 Seahawks:
4.4 yards per play
1 INT every 18.7 pass attempts
1 fumble recovery every 86 total plays

1 turnover total per 24 plays
Gave up .24 points per snap
1 sack for every 12 pass attempts

Edit: When you add in run vs pass information it shows that Seattle had a much better pass defense, and Denver had a slightly better front line. Seattle was much better overall when it came to stopping points and getting the ball.

Double Edit: Strength of schedule, Denver's was the 10th most difficult this year, Seattle's was tied for 10th in 2013. Without going to individual game data and opponents, I would say that's about as good as it gets.

i'm going to disagree.  again, offense affects the defense.  scoring defense is a perfect example--if your offense is consistently giving up short fields, your scoring defense is going to be substantially worse.  that's just the nature of the game.  look at the differential in passer rating: SEA '13: 106.  DEN '15: 76 (IIRC).  SEA's defense was very good, and especially good when linked with a very efficient offense.  DEN didn't have that luxury.

IMO, BAL is a better comparative than either CHI or SEA, because BAL's defense wasn't getting much offensive help.  a better case can be made there.

The Broncos defense was great this season, but some people are taking the praise a bit too far comparing them to the 85 Bears.

The rules now a days make make it impossible to achieve the success that the 85 Bears had. The NFL is way to offense friendly now in an attempt to make games more "exiting". Bronco's defense may be as dominant as a defense can be with the current rules in place.

1985 Bears: Int: 34. FF: 9. Opp PPG: 12.4. Shutouts: 4

2000 Ravens: Int: 23. FF: 19. Opp PPG: 10.3. Shutouts: 4

2013 Seahawks: Int: 28. FF: 24. Opp PPG: 14.4. Shutouts: 1.

And thats how Trent Diffler has a ring!

To be fair though:

Trent Dilfer in the 2000-01 playoffs:

590 passing yards, 3 TD's & 1 INT

Tom Brady in the 2001-02 playoffs:

572 passing yards, 1 TD & 1 INT

Peyton Manning in the 2015-16 playoffs:

631 passing yards, 2 TD's & 1 INT

Yup. QB play is vastly overrated.

Totally agree. Before this year, I probably would have disagreed. But Denver's SB win proved to me that QB play can be mostly irrelevant with a strong enough defense.

Stupid fuck.

Anyone who does that is a stupid fuck, but when you are a few weeks away from signing a $50M+ contract that will set you up for life and you do that then you are a special kind of stupid fuck.

Bonds' whole head got bigger.  With Manning though it seems like it might just be his forehead.

Eagles gave Sam Bradford a two year deal worth $36M with $26M guaranteed.

Last season Bradford was tied for 25th in passer rating.

There just aren't enough starting QBs in the league.  Unfortunately, if they don't sign Bradford, who are they gonna start?  Hell, Alex Smith is on 17m a year.  Matt Ryan is on 20.75m/yr.  Flacco is on 20.1.

Either they pay out for Bradford or they sign Kaep or RG3 or Manziel or someone lol

As an Eagles fan I ma happy with the deal. Its the best "Right now option". 13 Million guaranteed a year for 2 years, is relatively affordable for a starting QB. The draft class this year for QBS is less than stellar, and there is really no there good option in FA.

It builds continuity, it will work for this year and next.

Many were--I wasn't, he was overpaid when he was with Dallas. Injury prone, and a product of an amazing Offensive line.
