Russia claims to have developed secret 'superweapon' capable of switching off foreign satellites and enemy weapons

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-3151339/Russia-claims-developed-superweapon-capable-switching-foreign-satellites-enemy-weapons.html

"Russia has claimed to have built a revolutionary new weapon system that can render enemy satellites and weapons useless.

Its Russian makers say it is a 'fundamentally new electronic warfare system' which can be mounted on ground-based as well as air- and sea-borne carriers.

However, it has refused to reveal how the system works."

Hey Putin, we did Star Wars in the 80s.  Why don't you guys try something original this time.

"'The system will target the enemy's deck-based, tactical, long-range and strategic aircraft, "

According to their schtick, it takes out about everything that uses electronics or guidance.

Maybe it's like that raytheon mini emp deal?

Its a coin flip in my mind.  On one side Russia could be playing a bluff and can't do jack shit, but hey look at us we're powerful, fear us and leave us alone.  On the other hand if it is true, revealing ANYTHING would be pointless as it could provide data points to develop a counter to it.  Either way if it doesn't exist yet, I'm sure someone WILL create it in due time, just the nature of the game at this point.

Let's not. Russia knows our one big advantage over them is electronics. Command, targeting, etc. they have been working on non-nuclear EMP weapons since the early '60s. We don't need to get a surprise electronic Pearl Harbor... Another military thing we were sure of.  Silly Japs.

The kicker is we will probably end the next war in our favor, which deters idiots not one jot.

Sounds like they have developed and can deploy SCALAR weapons now...rumor has it they tested it on a US Carrier fleet in the Gulf...completely shut down an Aegis among other things....

You mean that horse shit story where they reported something like half the crew quit the navy afterwards?
And how the weapon was being carried by an SU-27?
Truth is if you have such an overwhelming advantage like they claim to have then you should be invading nations with impunity.
I don't believe shit from a nation that can only field 12 of their new fighters and still claim they are better than F-22s.
They have this weapon but can't field a surface navy worth a shit?
They also can barely maintain their sub fleet?

We are fielding lasers and rail guns while the Russians pin their hopes on CGI videos of wonder weapons like some kind of delusional 21st century Hitler.

I would be more worried about deployed Russian satellites full of birdshot that deploy in case of war.

That capability is within their wheelhouse, directed ground to space EMP is definitely not.

It may mean nothing will be in orbit but that would be an overall net plus for them, imagine PFC Snuffy without GPS trying to call in CAS.

except that ASAT hasnt been a thing since the late 80's.  with weapons procurement the way it is, it would probably take at least a decade to get a working missile going

You don't announce something like that unless one of two things are true:

1) It doesn't really exist and your attempts to develop it failed miserably

2) It has existed for a long time and you have something much better under wraps

With this being Russia, I believe the odds on it being #1 are very safe.

Per some not so credible blog sites, they claimed to have shut down a ship in the Black Sea. IIRC, there were some massive holes in the story.

The Krasuha 1L269-4 is just a high power radar and radio jammer.

During the South Ossetia conflict, the Russian airforce had heavy losses due to not having an effective electronic warfare capability. 24 planes were shot down in 5 days.
In response,  the Russians developed the Krasuha 1L269-2.

Entering service in 2013, the Krasuha 1L269-4 is replacing it, with the Russians exporting the older system to Vietnam and other countries.
The Krasuha 1L269-4 is more advanced, and has a longer range,150-300 km, and so is now capable of intercepting low-earth satellites.

This is just lazy journalism by the  Daily mail.
