How much does it weigh?  The Excursion apparently caps around 11k lbs (2005) for a V-10. So the dry weight alone of most of the nicer toy haulers could exceed the towing capacity of an Excursion.

Same year F-350 can haul 13K, and has a MUCH higher gross vehicle rating which means that whatever you pack in the the vehicle and tongue weight can be higher.


The Excursion has Gross weight allowing basically 1670 lbs of people, cargo, and the weight of the trailer over it's base weight.  Just looking up tongue weights of some 40' toy haulers, you could very well BLOW past that not even trying with the trailer alone.





4.30 or lower gears will go in plus F350 front and rear springs and airbags.
Did you not read it's the same frame  and rear axle as a F250 /350?
Front axle is a dana 50 with is the same as the front of a 250 until about 2004 or 2005 when the 250 got the same dana 60 as a 350


Just make sure you have 2.73's in the rear for good MPG and then put the 4.30 in the front for towing power only when needed!

Yea but people pull them all the time with a SRW 250's and 350's.
When you get to you destination and want to go exploring with your tow vehicle the DRW kinda suck.
Only got 14 maybe 14.5 MPG hand calculated unloaded with that truck.

CA is the worst state to own a pre 2008 diesel.

Large commercial truck already had to retrofit DPF's with terrible results.

All the newer diesel are super high maintenance with emissions related equipment.

My 2008 needed to be taken on a long drive every week or so just to allow it time to regenrate the DPF AS I ONLY WORKED 8 MILES FROM HOME!

This thread was not to argue gas vs diesel.

And 2005 was the last year of the excursion anyway.
Is your intention to use it as a large commercial truck?  In not, not an applicable argument.    

If you're already going to buy a 2005 or older Excursion, wouldn't a 2005 or older truck fit the bill just as well?  In which case diesel would be fine since all you would have to do is... drive it.
That would mean the newer "super high maintenance" wouldn't matter.

This.  Just buy an F250 pickup truck if you want a fifth wheel.

You'll need to upgrade a stock Ex's suspension anyway, it was 'dumbed down' a bit from the F250.  The 250 springs actually raise the truck an inch or so over stock Ex springs.

Excursion frame is not the same as the trucks.

It has a hump over the rear axle and WAY less crossmembers because as you might imagine it doesnt need to be as stiff since it has a full body on it.

The only thing that is the same is the frame in front of the B pillar, erry thing else different yo.

Let me solve this for you OP.

A DIESEL pickup, it is better despite what all the haters say. No one compares their diesel engine to a gas engine when pulling stuff.

If you really want a gas as much as you say you do, buy a 6.0 Chevy 2500HD. Out of all the gas trucks this one tows best for the money.

And if you bitch about IFS I want to remind you you are thinking about cutting a gas Excursion in half...

If you do decide to do it though, I have cut a Toyota Previa's roof off ala Top Gear convertible people carrier.

Sawzall and a lack of give a damn gave me and my buddies a sweet chick magnet for the weekend.

But, sad poverty tow rig maybe not so much.

It does not make sense to spend a shitload of cash to cut up and modify an excursion to haul a 5th wheel when you can get a shortbed F250 with a slider hitch, and be set. I know you are trying to save wheelbase (which, honestly, makes even less sense since you're hauling a 40' toy hauler), but just get an ext. cab shortbed pickup. It'll maybe be 1-2' longer than the excursion, and not be dangerous or retardedly expensive. If it's worth it to you to drop all that time and fab to save 2', go for it I guess, it's your money. Just make sure to post progress pics.

I wouldn't touch it. excursions are know to have weak rear ends and transmissions.
