Had a guy set a small cesna down 50' from me and I never knew.... Was working at Maresk pier 400 in Los Angeles..
The guy came in dead stick from right to left and set it down in the light tan colored sand on the lower tip... He touched down only 20-30' from the rocks / breakwater and was stopped in under a 100'... I was working in the farthest lane out and didn't know anything had happened until the fire trucks and emergency equipment showed up in FULL force.. Fire boats too.. Aircraft was undamaged but the wing had to be removed so they could truck it out...

Your first duty as a pilot is to make sure that you and your passengers if you have any make it out alive in an emergency. What happened was tragic, but there's nothing anyone could have done.
On a fixed gear aircraft, if you ditch in the water, you're gonna be cartwheeling the second your gear digs in. Cartwheel fast enough and you get knocked out by G forces or the aircraft gets ripped apart, and you wake up disoriented, upside down, and with no way out... Or you don't wake up at all. He took a bite out of the shit sandwich, and unfortunately someone else got killed. It's not like he aimed for them. Hell, he probably didn't even see them. Downward visibility sucks close to the ground. |

It's a POS banner plane that lost the engine and TBH, the guy probably should've put it in the water given the amount of people on the beach. He was probably a low time pilot though, since that's who dose those jobs normally to build flight time. Before you ask what I'd do, I'll tell you. I had a guy get his chute hung on the tail of a plane I was flying for a skydive place and lock the rudder and elevator, only leaving the ailerons. I had a chute and thought about bailing out, but there was a good chance it would've crashed into one of a number of neighborhoods below. I stayed with it and landed it safely because in the end, it's my responsibility to not hurt other people. This guy took a huge risk to save his own but when he could've just as easily put it just off the coast and not risked any lives on the beach. |

IMO, he should have ditched in the water or gone for the 2+ mile long, 4 lane road that is about 30 feet away from where he put down.
Where a lot of people are walking around seems like the very last place you would want to land a plane. Just glad nobody died. Kid gets to tell a heck of a story too. How many people have been hit by a plane? Given California's knee jerk reactions by government, that is probably the end of planes towing banners over the beach. |

Few years back, a male beach jogger with ear buds in was beheaded by wing of an emergency landing due to prop bladder burst that covered windshield in oil. IIRC, he was the lone Joe on the whole winter beach.

IIRC that was quite a purse-swinging thread a while back. First thing I thought of seeing the thread title. But it's the democrat "them" who practice class warfare. I never practiced class warfare, I said that this dude's hobby, which it is, shouldn't cost other people's lives. He should have bitten the bullet and augured in.
