Lisinopril HCTZ
Seems to be working, my BP is always good when I have my checkups. My doctor tried me on something else prior to it but it was giving me weird side effects (red skin, very tired sensation). |
|
Benecar HCT Benicar HCT (Olmesartan Medoxomil-Hydrochlorothiazide)
No noticeable side effects except possibly pissing a little more often. |
|
Only one that works for me without side effects is irbesartan (Avapro).
|
|
|
In the past I've used many.
Diovan worked the best (but of course it was also the most expensive). Lisinopril also worked but it gave me the "Lisinopril Cough" so I quit it. Now that I'm retired, I walk six miles with my dog every morning and that pretty much eliminated the need for me to take BP meds. ETA: There are Beta blockers and Ace Inhibiters - they both work differently. You need to work with your doc. |
|
Take the one your doc prescribes. Different populations show better response to different meds.

Since I gave up fast food (except for the occasional Carl's Jr teriyaki burger) I was able to get off meds. And I lost 20 pounds.

If you have diabetes/prediabetes they use an ACE or ARB like lisinopril or losartan. Otherwise a DHP CCB like amlodipine is first line. Beta-blockers have fallen out of favor as first and second line, as well as 12.5 mg of HCTZ (good ol' JNC 7). Your doc will prescribe the right one for you based on what else is wrong with you, or lack thereof. |
|
Personally prefer Micardis (telmisartan) since it has the longest half-life of all the ARB's. Many prescribers will start with an ACE inhibitor due to low cost. Caucasians generally respond to either thiazide diuretic, ACE inhibitor, ARB or calcium channel blocker. Blacks generally respond better to hctz or calcium channel blockers. Other factors like kidney function, pregnancy, and other comorbidities also also involved. You PCP will take this things into account when prescribing.

Atacand HCT - only side effects is having to urinate more often if I forget to take it for a day.

Just because one works for somebody does not mean it will work for you.
listen to the doctor, lose weight if needed, eat better, do more exercise. |
|
Had it checked yesterday and it was 170 / 110 . It's been like that for the last 20 years . I just never wanted to start taking meds for it because I figured once you start em there is no stopping. I figure it's about time. High BP runs in the family. Dad is on Benicar and has good results. My doc just basically told me, there are a lot of them out there and I can write a script for one if I decide I want to start taking them.

Took Lisinopril for years.
I had suddenly developed an allergy to it. Trip to the hospital- near thing. Lips swelled up as if I had a bug bite then beathing difficultys. At the hospital they asked about my meds. "Ah Ha, Lisinopril allergy" Now I am on Losartan. |

Losartan
I take it once per day. Works very well. Last re-checks have been 120/70 122/66 122/68. I've had no side effects. Edit: A lot of this is genetic. Everyone on my Mom's side has/had high blood pressure. But we have genetically low cholesterol. |

I didn't mean to be smarmy or insulting, but diet and exercise are what dropped my BP. My old man was on both cholesterol and BP meds when he was my age, I have no need for either even though at age 20 I was getting pretty high for both and it was looking like I was headed down that road. My old man also weighs quite a bit more than me and I am now 40. |

Home cooked chow, handful of Blueberrys daily, and Bisoprolol..
Seriously, go snag a couple pints of Blueberry's, and scarf them..then watch your blood pressure. I gotta be careful about that shit. Couple years back in the middle of harvest, I thought the meds were screwed up, and went to the Doc. Nope. Walking around all day eating Blueberry's, dropped the BP 15 points. |

Along with two daily doses of 25mg Metoprolol. The doctor who put me on the Benicar several years ago said he liked it because few people appear to have side effects. It works and does not affect my sex life which is clearly important. |
