Can't believe I missed this thread.  The market is already largely adjusted for any influence Greece has on it.  Greece isn't unexpected and thus factored in...aka there won't be a panic about it.

Not to worry, we're not done going down yet.

Greece has other payment deadlines in July and August that they probably won't make without compromise with their creditors.

Additionally, the referendum this week probably won't prompt Greek leaders to cave.

Greece will officially be in default on 10 July, not today, according to the piece in the NYT:

Standard & Poor’s said in a statement Tuesday that it would designate Greece as being in default if the country cannot make payments to private creditors, like €2 billion in Greek Treasury bills that are due on July 10.
And once found in arrears, Greece is barred from receiving any more money from the I.M.F. until it settles the debt. That is a big problem, because the I.M.F. has been a crucial partner with the European Union in dealing with Greece, providing not only money but financial and economic expertise.
The I.M.F. confirmed that Greece had failed to make the payment, after a 6 p.m. Washington deadline came and went.

One thing I have learned.

NEVER listen to ANYONE who is predicting an exact time, or date, of the "event"..... no matter what it is, or what they use to back up their theory.

Anyone who thinks they can call the "day" is a complete moron, and always proves out to be.  Eventually they may be right..... you can scream "it's gonna crash".... wait 10 years.... and eventually you might be right.  But those are the people who will cost you dearly if you listen to them.

Exactly.

It's like the doomer circle-jerk thread here on arfcom.  Some of the same people have confidently been predicting "the collapse" since 2008.  Every year, it's right around the corner, and it's always about to happen.  And every time it doesn't happen, they make excuses and claim that the situation is dire, and it's all a house of cards, and it's unsustainable, and the total collapse is totally right around the corner.  Six months tops.

And the funniest thing of all is that when eventually the natural cyclical nature of economies DOES result in another recession, then they'll claim that they totally predicted it - and will furiously backpedal, and say that the recession is just a pre-cursor to the "total collapse" that's right around the corner, and is totally going to happen any day now. ... definitely in six months.

It's so cute. If they understood markets they way they think they do, and claim to, they'd all be billionaires.

I think most of them are wishing for it, too.

Well obviously.  That way, their decisions to NOT invest in the markets, and to cash out their 401k, will be validated - and they imagine that their small pile of silver and gold will be able to buy them a harem and a palace in the post-apocalyptic wasteland.

I just cannot fathom how Greece could have any effect on anything, any where, at any time.

IMHO, their collapse and the effect it would have on the global economy is akin to a deer standing in front of a freight train which is going balls out.

The danger, such as it is, lies not with the actual effects from a default by Greece but in the possible reaction to a default.

Not all investment decisions are made rationally. Sometimes reactions are out of proportion to the event which provokes the reaction. In other words, panic. In fact, some economic downturns have been caused by, and are named after, a panic.

At this time a panic has not occurred, but there has been no default since there is a 30 day grace period in which to make the payment which was due yesterday.

What might happen if Greece actually defaults on bond payments to private investors (due by the 10th IIRC) is anyone's guess.
