Very cool, love the lighting on the last few insect shots. The ammo detail is amazing! Keep it up!

Here's an old rifle round. I'm not an expert on German WWII era stuff but I'm guessing this is an 8mm round made in 1938.

Hard to get that eagle stamp in crisp focus. I'm gonna mess with that again later.

Here's a focus stacked version of the gold dot:

These are all uncropped images. You should be able to zoom in a fair bit and see things up closer.

It's a 8x56R Hungarian for the M95 straight pull rifle. Instead of the more common 8x57 Mauser used in the Mauser.

Not exactly. The vast majority were alive and outside and left alone after pictures.

The one that found its way into my room did die a horrible death, however.

I just went outside to try my luck. Normally during the hot part of the day there's not much moving around. I did find these, although I admit not my best work.

Bee working on some flowers:

This guy kept trying to tell the bee he could save a bunch of money on insurance:

Today was another mostly bust day. Didn't see much interesting. There are a few pics from yesterday, which I'm also counting as a bust.

These hot days in south Louisiana are brutal. Either there's not much stuff out and about or I'm just shit at finding things.

Either way, here's what I've cobbled together:

First up, a tiny flower maybe a half inch across.

DSC_5516 by Zack, on Flickr

A different kind of bee doing its thing:

DSC_5520 by Zack, on Flickr

Some kind of plant. I like the pattern it makes.

DSC_5522 by Zack, on Flickr

Dragonfly, zoom in for eye detail:

DSC_5525 by Zack, on Flickr

And the star of today's show, what I suspect is a type of spiny orb-weaver spider. I got a couple pics of one of these back on one of the earlier pages but they weren't that great. These aren't either. This dude's tiny, maybe 1/4 inch across or 1/2 on a good day. Hard to get a solid picture of:

This little fly is about the size of a piece of uncooked rice:

Done for now.

Found these bugs in the pool. More pics of them coming tomorrow. Ya'll know me, I like the eyes. So, I set up the super zoom rig and did those first. More full insect pics and such tomorrow. A few of the bugs I found I don't know what they are. When I get the full "head to toe" pics (or whatever you'd call it) perhaps someone can help identify them. Anyways, on with the pics:

First up, red wasp. See these all over. People say they're horrible but every one I've examined close up doesn't even have a stinger.

DSC_5570 by Zack, on Flickr

Dragonfly:

DSC_5572 by Zack, on Flickr

This is one of the mystery bugs. The eye shape and construction and all make me think it's related to flies..but this thing is absolutely huge.

DSC_5574 by Zack, on Flickr

We can get closer though.

DSC_5574-2 by Zack, on Flickr

Here's another I'm not so sure of:

DSC_5578 by Zack, on Flickr

More pics tomorrow!

1-red wasp
2-dragonfly
3,4- horsefly
5-giant waterbug?

With the close up of the horsefly, it almost makes me feel bad to smash them. Almost.

Seriously cool man, the zoom on that setup is crazy!

I am really enjoying your macro shots! I bought my wife a Nikon D3200 last Christmas. Of course, she takes "portrait" type of photos. I decided to play with it one day and the first thing I found myself doing was taking pics of bugs.

Of course, we still have the cheap NIKKOR lenses and they don't do much for close up. Focus can't focus. But it was still fun. And now... I find myself wanting more! Jerk.

Please, keep the photos coming! I'd be excited to see some close up of fish, reptiles, etc. Something with some scales!

Fish are not easy with this particular setup. It's kinda not waterproof (and the housing to make it waterproof costs a couple thousand bucks). I did a few shots at an aquarium with it a while back. I've got another camera I use for underwater work.

If you want to learn more about macro stuff, check out this thread I made in the photography forum. It talks about gear for macro, basic techniques and such.

These pics weren't done with the macro lens, and don't really fit the theme of this thread but since you asked:

It's been a while since I've dragged out the macro lens to shoot stuff. Today I fixed that.

First off, a cool little sticky frog:

DSC_6338 by Zack, on Flickr

DSC_6339 by Zack, on Flickr

Next - ze mystery bug. I've got no idea what this thing is, but I think it was blowing bubbles or something. Some kinda stick bug looking thing. With a smaller one on its back.

I also performed a free retinal scan on the neighbor's dog.

First though, a few flowers

Bug that is blowing bubbles is a common walking stick.

Second bug that you found in the pool is a cicada, or commonly called a locust. They are the noisy ones that you hear during the spring that make a sound like an ever increasing-surging buzzing sound for about 15-20 seconds. You'll often find their shells stuck to trees when they molt and turn into the flying type that you have there.

Much googling has enabled me to identify the mystery bugs from yesterday.

#1 is a four toothed Mason wasp
#2 is the larvae of a milkweed leaf beetle

Go me.

Was the monarch caterpillar near you? As in, is it close enough to try and follow its metamorphosis into a butterfly? Those would be some cool pictures!

He was on a milkweed plant in my mom's garden. He's not there now.

Not sure where he got off to.

i wouldn't know enough to have any idea.

it was just a thought, like some old black powder guns going off or something. i have no idea, but i was just wondering if macro can work as an action shot. im guessing not. but i honestly have zero idea one way or the other.

wood and steel was my immediate thought. showing all the imperfections and character.

not asking for anything just curious if it had crossed your mind. i don't know enough about photography to even suggest though.

Neighbor lady came over here in excitement with a small plastic bag. Swore up and down I'd like what I found in there.

I looked inside and saw something flying around. I put the bag in the freezer for a few minutes while I prepared my camera, just long enough to slow the little dude down a bit for pictures.

What was in the bag, you are wondering?

A banded cucumber beetle! Truth is, these things are pests and should be killed on sight, but they look so cool I had to get some pictures.

This one was released unharmed, however any of his fellows that find their way into the garden will not find a warm welcome.

I haven't really done any macro stuff for a while. Here's a few focus stacked images (just fiddling around with photoshop to learn how it handles stacking)

These pictures should be viewed full size to appreciate the depth of field and detail available in them.
