So some jackass posted a sale notice in the Photography forum. I, like a jackass took the time to read it.
Being the jackass that I am, I did a jackass thing and ordered a new-to-me lens. It's a Nikon 105mm f/2.8D Micro. AKA a proper macro lens. New? 800ish bucks. I got it for less than half that. Today's pictures are testing that sucker out! First up, some colorful flowers that you've all seen before. Found it on a tomato plant. DSC_3584 by Zack, on Flickr DSC_3587 by Zack, on Flickr And now for the good stuff. This fly, I'm not sure what kind it is but it's about twice the size of a common housefly. Those are some awesome pics. What model camera do you have and what would you recommend to a newbie for a good entry level camera/ lens that takes good quality photos?

I always look at dragonflies as the perfect arial assault platform. Damn things look like they're built for combat.

How do you get them to stay for the picture...
Are they dry frozen? |

As mentioned in the OP, the lens today was a 105mm f/2.8D macro. I also used a camera mounted bounced/diffused SB910 to help light things up a bit. The camera doesn't matter nearly as much as the person using it. Once you get into stuff like this..sure, a good camera and quality glass helps..but when you're talking entry level stuff...they're all basically the same. It's what YOU do with it. Learn to use the settings, or just leave it on dummy mode and click away? You make the difference. |

Nice glass jackass!
<Goes to dig up 100mm F/2.8 macro & a body to slap it on> <slaps head remembering those were the FILM days> <starts surfing for Pentax digital bodies> <yells out "Fvck you OP!"> <launches eBay app...> |

Awesome, bugs look crazy like that, how far away were you from them?

So I fired a full power flash at em to see what happened. Turns out, it kinda shuts em down for a few minutes. They quit moving, giving me enough time to take a few pics, they'd start moving..hit em again No harm no foul..all went on about their business after the photos were taken. |

WOW nice work
Getting better all the time I am partial to the lizard and dragon fly pics detail was excellent thanks |
|
|
Great shots, Zack!
Do you serve them drinks so they'd hold still? |

Well done. Those are very good. You should be proud. View Quote I am. I've been shooting pics for years as anyone on ARF here can tell you. But, macro photography is a relatively new interest of mine. I've tinkered with it a few times but never really got all that into it. Things change. |

lacking a button allowing me do so may I simply spell this out the old fashioned way.
LIKE. |

Thank you for sharing. I always enjoy your pics. I particularly like the anole and dragonfly pics.

Awesome! I love macro photography. I have that same lens, and now I want to get it out of the safe...
That reddish bug that was on your tomato plant is evil and turns into a large bug that will destroy tomato plants. When you're done taking pictures of it, destroy them with extreme prejudice. |

Nice work, OP.
Were you at minimum focus on the lens and moving the camera to obtain focus, or were you focusing on the lens itself? |

View Quote What I found to work best for me when shooting handheld outside is a combination of those methods. Start at minimum focus and move closer until you have focus and click. If that doesn't work, say the wind is blowing or the bug is moving, I will start farther out and focus as I get closer. I can't say if it's right or wrong but it seems to work. |

I don't much care for insects, but dragonflies are just too cool.

It's about as macro as you can get with one in flight. I read the title as more a general picture thread about the best you've taken, and they just happen to be macros. This is one of the best I've taken, even if it's not a macro. |
