It does seem to be a good indicator of the person you run into will:

a.  Appear awkward socially and not shake your hand when introducing themselves
b. Stare at their smart phone and text during your conversation
c. Drive a brodozer
d. All of the above

So why do baseball players wear them?

I think it's less the above than an attempt to be like the "metal mulisha" MX douchebags.  Bonus douche points if the ears are tucked in the hat as well.

Probably around 1998-1999.   Maybe even earlier than that.  Mike Muir was sporting the look in the '80s.

I've got 30+ New Era 59Fifty-type baseball, football and basketball caps...one a Red Sox cap going back to 1975 when my parents bought it for me and they all have buttons on the top.

Proper curve radius is entirely dependent on the size of your head.

Flat Bills also aren't something new.
They look ok on some people. They don't look right on me so I don't wear them.

The button on the top is a ball-cap staple.

I have an old 5950 that I bought in the '90s as a kid, when they were still made out of wool, wish they still were. The hat itself was shaped differently, too.

ETA: Pro Tip: If you want your 5950 to not be a "flat-bill bro/gangster cap" then get one the proper size. If you can fit your ears under the cap, you are both an idiot, and your hat is too big.

I think that the DSM has a paragraph, or two, on your affliction.

DSM guide to mental disorders

Look for this:

"Koumpounophobia: The Fear of Buttons.  Koumpounophobia is the phobia of buttons. Usually, but not always, it is buttons on clothing."

There is help.

Hey guy some day I might decide to become a dirt bag felon and Ill have the tattoo thing already covered. I agree just cause you have a flat billed hat doesn't mean anything but when you add ears tucked in, a bro dozer and white shades it borders on a sure bet

I remember when all the old guys wore caps up high on the head and wanted a nice flat bill

In order to set themselves apart, the young guys would bend the bill in a curve and wear them flatter to the skull.  The guys in their 40's and 50s and 60's thought it looked stupid.

Now those 'young guys' are themselves in their 40s and 50s and 60s, and look at the lower generation who have reverted to flat bills and think they look stupid.

Only time the buttons bother me is when wearing ear muffs shooting.

We destroyed cap bills as a kid in the 90's.

A large amount of my youth baseball caps had their bills formed with a baseball, and the bill rubber banded around it. It would look like a taco when you were done. And then there was always that slow kid who would just cut to the chase, and fold the fucker right down the middle.
