I didn't think they had this kind of range.

NY-bound passenger jet reports near-miss with drone

A commercial airliner narrowly missed colliding midair with a drone at 2,700 feet as it neared New York's LaGuardia Airport Friday morning, just hours after a string of incidents involving lasers pointed at planes, according to federal officials.

The pilot reportedly had to swerve upward over Brooklyn's Prospect Park in order to avoid the drone as the plane neared the airport. The incident followed several earlier instances of pilots reporting they had lasers pointed at them near New York airports.

You know how commercial pilots have "bird strikes" now and again...?
Get ready for drone stikes

Moving at a few hundred miles per hour, I wouldn't think they'd see something as small as a drone in time to take evasive action.  Do pilots dodge single birds?

Sounds like BS to me, but I'm not a pilot.

Were the "lasers" attached to sharks?

Maybe "drones" are the new "swamp gas" and "weather balloons."

Anyway, I thought that they could only go a few hundred feet away from the transmitter. I'm willing to believe 1,000 feet even.

But a half mile?

Seems excessive.

Paging mayor DeBlasio....

Ban "drones", it's for the souls on board.

Depends on the radio gear used. Off the shelf stuff is pretty limited.

You can build a drone using radio gear that has a much longer range, but you nee a ham radio operator's license to use it.

It's always possible the drone malfunctioned and just got stuck at maximum climb.  Transmitter range wouldn't be a factor.  Then it's just down to battery life and power.

Standard off the shelf hobby grade transmitter will go more then a mile if it is straight up.
Here is a dick head taking a phantom 2 to 4921 feet.

This, depending on weather conditions and location of receiver.

All of your 5channel+ Spektrum radios will have a mile+ range.

Range is line of site.  People have launched RC. Planes attached to balloons and ascended to over 100,000', released the plane and let it glide down.  Then once it reached maybe 20,000' they activated the electric motor and tried to fly it close to the point of liftoff.  The one I watched on YouTube missed by maybe 30 miles.

Idiots like that will be the death of the industry for private flights.

Fucking assholes.

They were already talking about banning them near airports up here.

I think the radius of what is considered "near" just got a lot bigger.

Or you can program in a flight path and have it fly where ever the battery life will take it.  10k feet is not unheard of in a powered glider.

Easy.

2.4 is pretty good in optimal conditions.  Reliability will go down with the farther distances,  But in favorable conditions one mile is easy.  With a simple antenna mod on my QX I more than doubled the range.

Now you can also do ham spectrum radio systems,  433 IIRC,  those will really stretch out there.

Well for one he was over a populated area. If that quad had fallen out of the sky he could have hurt someone badly.
Way out side his line of sight and no spotter could see what is going on around him at that height.  His camera can show him what is happening in a tiny slice in front of him but he would have no way of knowing if a plane was about to run into him from behind.
If he lost his video feed he could not have safely landed his quad.  This can and will happen.
If he had lost GPS there is no way he could have salfy landed.  This can and will happen
If he had broken a prop  he could not have safely landed his quad.  This can and will happen.
If he had a battery go bad  he could not have safely landed his quad.  This can and will happen.
Do I need to go on?

This coming from someone that has an FPV quad copter less then 6 feet from him.
