Ayup... same thing with loaning seemingly trivial amounts of money, e.g. $5-$15, maybe up to a few hundred depending on the circumstances. Realizing that what I'm doing for someone or money that I'm lending them is sometimes merely a expected 'cost' in order to determine their value to me... priceless.

You are putting your woman " on the street"

Pimps walk with the woman closest to street.

You place yourself between the woman and the street if you care for her.

I am going to jump in here. My Grandmother was old school San Francisco raised. She made it a point to teach us at an early age that men ALWAYS walked on the street side of the sidewalk.

To be fair, it's been a while since we've had horse drawn carriages slinging mud up where it'd be an issue.

That said, left side always unless the rare occasion like the photo shows and you're walking against traffic. Just habit.

What a fucking troglodyte.  1) he's not even wearing a sword to defend his lady's honor. 2) If he were wearing a sword, and needed to defend his lady's honor, he would draw his sword presumably with his right hand, and because his lady is on his right side, run the risk of striking her with his elbow or hilt.  This is why we can no longer have nice things; because men both refuse to go armed in public and refuse to escort their ladies on the correct side. Fucking hump.

I will withdraw my statement if the gentleman in question is left handed.

If the intent is to "protect" the wife/lady then it would be easier to just never allow her to leave the house unless in the company of a male relative.

In fact, to be TRULY "chivalrous" we should pass some kind of law, that would make it illegal for women to go anywhere unaccompanied.  Also, we better make it illegal for them to drive, since that's pretty dangerous and they could get hurt.

Perhaps.
I was taught that I was supposed to walk on the side nearest the road.
In other words I was supposed to be the sacrificial lamb in the event something bad went down or some such.
If a car hits a puddle the guy is supposed to take the water instead of the lady.

I used to stay between my wife and the traffic.

Then a couple months ago we were going to a nice dinner place down town, and she was on my right. We were approached by a scruffy homeless guy that stared yelling something unintelligible and angry at us. I couldn't see his hands.  She clenched up on my strong arm when I was on Red Alert, and there was no way I could draw my gun as he kept coming towards us.

Now I try to keep her on my left if there are people around.

If she wants to LEAVE HIM OVER IT..........

That all being said.......I'd hate to see a M/C rider come by and snatch her purse.  Some women just can't be thought some stuff. So anyway, she should be walking on the inside.......for that reason too.

I always have my wife walk wherever she's safest. I take the outside on sidewalks, I take the side towards traffic or towards strangers on the street.

I don't know about the definition of chivalry, It's simply my intention to protect my wife at all times. Any man that doesn't isn't really a man, in my opinion.

Its not dead for me personally.  I still do it even if they object.  Gets them riled up.

We had one at work and all the other women hated her and loved it when a man held the door for them.  We played a joke on her once where I held the door open for the women leaving for lunch and the feminist objected.  All the other women came up to me and thanked me and gave me their phone numbers as though they wanted to go out on a date.  The feminist about had a coronary.

Originally, chivalry had little of anything to do with male and female interaction, and actually meant "horsemanship", referring to a code of noble/knightly conduct in a martial sense, heavily dipped in Christian ethics. Kind of like a deep version of today's "Army Values" that you see on the posters lining the walls on post.
View Quote
It was like that in its ideal, but in practice it was just a way for nobles to ensure they didn't get killed outright at the end of a battle.

That's sort of like saying that the Bill of Rights is a list of rights with one little bit about keeping and bearing arms.

The fact that most of those who wrote and recorded chivalric oaths always included a reference to women was a huge differentiator at the time.  Absent a direct reference to women, there was always, at least, a charitable reference to protecting the helpless.

Think of these as a knight's General Orders:

Knight’s Oaths in Song of Roland (11th century)

To fear God and maintain His Church

To serve the liege lord in valour and faith

To protect the weak and defenceless

To give succour to widows and orphans

To refrain from the wanton giving of offence

To live by honour and for glory

To despise pecuniary reward

To fight for the welfare of all

To obey those placed in authority

To guard the honour of fellow knights

To eschew unfairness, meanness and deceit

To keep faith

At all times to speak the truth

To persevere to the end in any enterprise begun

To respect the honour of women

Never to refuse a challenge from an equal

Never to turn the back upon a foe.

The point of that was to discourage rapes and murders when they sacked a captured city. The Song of Roland was nothing but a propaganda piece on behalf of the nobility, who paid their soldiers in plunder.

I actually was out walking with a young lady a couple of weeks ago, and this very thing came up.  I stepped to the outside, citing chivalry, and she didn't object.  Good girl, going to spend more time with her.

Chivalry was a system that had requirements for both women and men.

These days people only complain about the male part being dead.
View Quote

I've found most women today don't understand a lot of the finer details.  I don't think it's becuase they are feminazis or anything, it's just that their parents never taught them and they didn't read the book.

One example is getting into a cab.  If you are picked up streetside, the man gets in FIRST and slides across the seat.  This is so #1 nobody had to open the door traffic side, and #2 the lady does not have to slide across the seat herself, and fuss with keeping her clothes in order during or after the event.

I can't count the number of times I've been with someone who jumps right in street side and then sits there like a lump.  Once many years ago I even had a girl make a frowny face at me because I got in ahead of her.

Revolving doors are another one.
I'm just tired of trying to do things the right way and it causing more problems, and since nobody else is going to fucking bother with it, I pretty much gave up.  I'll still hold open a door, if it is practical and convenient.  But I do that for all people.  If I see someone with a bunch of shit in their hands heading to a door, I will run and open it (even if it is a door I do not intend to go through)

Outside of that, everybody (of both genders) is on their fucking own and can fuck right off.  The world gets what it wants sometimes.
