It looks like it might be an 1893 not worth fixing.

Never mind. A closer look shows it doesn't have the cutout at the back of the ejection port above the bolt.

The cost to fix it would be more than the cost of having a new receiver made.

An experienced welder could maybe do something. The receiver is also sprung who knows how many years it sat broken.

I don't really care I'm never going to shoot it...

Ok, I'm gonna throw this out there. I don't know if the gun is a shooter, or if the receiver being cracked there means it has stress cracks elsewhere but why not weld it? Would the receiver be able to hold up a against a low voltage mig gun without blowing through? I don't see what it would hurt unless the material wouldn't hold up to it. There a smaller welds holding more pressure than that. Grind it smooth, sand it, boom fixed.

Cool gun anyway op

Eta: why did it crack? That seems kinda substantial, and in a weak spot of the receiver, so what exactly caused it to happen?

Pull the barrel(is it tight) and let's see how much adjustment is left.

It is one of my favorite things to do when I find an old 97.

Didn't look very close at the pictures. Didn't realize it was a taken down so no fun for me. If it was a takedown you push the pin in the end of the mag tube down and rotate the tube using the pin. Then turn barrel 90°.

And I just today, I fixed the stock on my Winchester 1897.  Manty more cowboy matches are in it's future.

You might be able to salvage parts.

Aloha, Mark

The Winchester 1893 shotgun is not approved for general SASS match usage.  Thus, I wouldn't buy it it I were you.  They are said to be weak.

I'm not digging mine out of the safe to see - but where does the bolt lock up?  In the front or the rear?  If in the front why would welding up the rear be an issue?

I wonder how in the world someone managed to do that to a M97.  They are pretty stout guns.  Anything that heavy that kicks as hard as they do (at least mine does) should be damn near indestructible.  I used to think my M37 Ithaca kicked, till I took my M97 squirrel hunting a couple of times.

From my reading it's not that they are weak it's that they were designed for black powder and can't take the abuse caused by modern smokeless powder.

Please....... I paid almost a whole $7.00 for it.

I was in a gun shop the house passed I followed the seller out the door.

I bought two shotguns, and a .22 S-L-LR (yes i know) bolt action Remington 33. The other shotgun was a break top Harrington & Richards " Ray State" 12 guage.

Yes I did buy it cracked. Wouldn't you?

At $7 it's a no brainer.   So YES, in a New York minuet.

I have three TD models and mostly I see TD models at SASS matches.   But, I know some SASS shooters might be able to use the parts.   Soild frame models are out there too.   But, I hardly see them.

Aloha, Mark

For $7.00 I would have bought it.

I bought a stevens 620 for $70 once just to get some cheap parts and sell what I didn't want/need.  The stripped receiver itself sold for $80.

My old baby has seen some stuff throughout it's lifetime........

(that pattern on the receiver is from the oil making contact with the soft case)

$7 isn't much fishing money.

But that's a good price for a toy even if you don't weld it back to shooting form.

Parts are all there.

After taking it down and cleaning all the black gummy tar like substance out of it, I think it can be salvaged by an experienced welder.

Still trying to figure out what the black tar was. It was seizing the action something fierce.

My dad and I got an 1897 with a rung barrel and a few other problems in a package deal much like the OP did. We ended up getting $200 parting it out and this was 15 years ago. I figure we had about $20 total in it.

Hell yea, save that old shotgun!  Weld on some gears and springs and wrap some copper wire around it and make a Steampunk shotgun

I've got one I'm thinking about sending off to have hard chromed into a Cowboy Pimp gun, or make a trench gun with a shround and some parkerizing.
