So help a guy out that  hasn't been paying attention to military aircraft technology for the last ten years or so.  Is the the F35 supposed to be better than the the F22?     I had it in my mind that the F22 was to the F15 as the F35 was to the F16.    Meaning the F35 being the cheaper easier to produce plane and the F22 the more sophisticated better overall performer.  Is this not true?

True except for the cheaper part. That no longer applies.

F-22 > F-35

But, they're built for different rolls. The F-22 for air superiority. The F-35...everything? Jack of all, master of none...

Different aircraft for different roles.
The F35 can do certain things better than the F22 and vice versa.

At what mission?

As stated, the F-35 is a compromise design, attempts to be a jack of all trades, doesn't excel at anything.
The F-22 is purpose built for air superiority, and achieved that goal.

The F-35 cannot survive in highly contested air space without an F-22 escort to clear it first.

By themselves, the F-22 is a superior fighter jet.  With the way we now fight as a networked system of systems, the F-35 will add more capability to the integrated force than the F-22 does once the F-35 program is mature.  Basically, in a 1v1 dogfight, I would take the Raptor, but in a war, I would take a wing of F-35s over F-22s, and I would take a combined force of both over anything.  Read this thread.

Yes. And the glock is better than the m240, the Abrams is better than the   apache, the aircraft carrier is also better than the ICBM....

Not important. Also coffee is better than a hamburger.

And both designs are the best engineering 1981 (F22) and 1996 (F35) had to offer.

Would love to hear what adversary fighter is the equal to a F-35 with a full internal bomb load.

F-22 is bluntly a  badass but JSF won't need an escort in non permissive environments.

JSF will create permissive environments while conducting strategic strike missions.

Gonna be a game changer.

F35 is a glorious aircraft, and will become more so in the future.
