I was near one (50') when it blew and it scared the crap out of me. Didn't phase the electrician at all as he said it might blow and had put on a helmet and other stuff before he tried to reset it. Shockingly loud. I didn't know there would be such a negative reaction to it. |

Yeah usually 20A fuses and below are about like a gunshot. Yeah u start getting bigger that that you are in KABOOM territory.

I've been about 20 ft away from one of these when it glockaboomed randomly...
Was simply getting into my car to find some dinner and whammo - big boom and puff of white smoke. It took a few crews that night to get it replaced. |

That "explosion" is intentional.
It's designed to blow out any arc that might develop when the fuse opens - Helps ensure that the load is disconnected afterwards. Quoted:

Was near a 4,860v one that let go... Though the crane had dropped a container on my head..
I forget what happened but something got down into the hot rail vault and started a party.. |
