Saw a Prius for sale in a yard today.  I'm not really interested, but I found myself wondering how much of GD will admit to owning or having owned a tree hugger car.

I love my first gen Prius I average over 50mpg most of the time and am comfortable enough with my sexuality that a car doesn't define it

Solid post. I felt the same way about my 91 Civic Hatch 4spd. Almost 50mpg and my truck got to keep low mileage.

I would be worried about the cost to replace the batteries.  I'm not sure how long of a warranty they have.

I had a 08 Prius. It was a great car and I regret selling it. Did it look dorky? Yes, but it cost virtually nothing to drive. I got rid of it because I hated the driver seat.

It doesn't cost any more than replacing the transmission in a regular car.

I looked into it prior to buying a used 2010 Prius last year.
Battery failure/replacement rate was low.  New OEM cost $6k, used or aftermarket/rebuilt $2-4k and dropping.
And if car is sold new in NY NJ or PA (and a few other states) Toyota has to warranty the battery to 150,000 mi.
Standard battery warranty on Prius is 100,000.
So, effectively not a major issue from my perspective.

Wife has a '15 Camry Hybrid.  Love it! All the power of the V6 but currently getting 39 mpg instead of the 30 the V6 had.  We don't live in, or near, a town either.

And as to OP,
My work commute is 106 miles.
13.5 MPG pickemup truck (which I still have)
48 MPG Prius...
Math, my friend. Math.

I had a 1999 or 2000 GEO Metro. 50 MPG was the lowest I ever on a tank of gas. Never babied it. I think I paid around 7000 for it. It had 150K on it when I sold it. Just starting to use a bit of oil between changes. I don't think I even put a set of brakes on it. One set of tires If I remember correctly.Needed a set when I sold it.  It wasn't a total dog either. If the government would keep their nose out of it we would have 70 mpg gas only cars by now.

Yeah, safer = heavier = shitty mileage.

Not me personally, but my GF has a 2009 Prius.  Has owned it since new, and has approximately 93,000 miles on it now.  Only real issue it's had was a water pump on the hybrid system, and the regular things like tires, brakes, etc.

She likes it, and is planning on keeping it till the wheels fall off.  Priuschat is a good source of info for the few times I've Googled for things like changing the rear wiper blade.

I have a 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid with 125,000 miles on it. It came with a lifetime warranty on the batteries. It averages about 42MPG. When you drive 40k miles per year, it makes sense.
