IBC is good, Dads? Barqs has a little bit different flavor/zip than most root beers, Dang! Is pretty good,Virgil's is pretty good, A&W makes better cream soda than root beer, Sprecher is good, Culvers restaurant has fantastic root beer, jones is okay, weinhards is okay, old town root beer co. makes a good sarsparilla, I think the best root beer I've ever had though was somewhere in New Mexico at a little backpacking resupply near Baldy mtn. they made it there, no idea what it was called.

Not a big help for most of you, but there is a little 50's style burger chain in western NY that makes their own. Tom Wahls. The burgers are decent, but that root beer is some of the best I have ever had.

Every one of you are all WRONG! "Not Your Father's Root Beer", by Small Town Brewery. I swear it reminds me of the homemade root beer my grandmother would
make occasionally around the Holidays whence I still believed in Santa (early 60's). You wouldn't know this stuff is 5.9% ABV. 'til you see it on the label. You could pour over ice cream and enjoy if you desire. Trust me on this, it IS that damn good. |

http://acimg.auctivacommerce.com/imgdata/0/2/3/4/5/2/webimg/5293156.jpgAbita Root Beer is made with a hot mix process using spring water, herbs, vanilla and yucca (which creates foam). Unlike most soft drink manufacturers, Abita sweetens its root beer with pure Louisiana cane sugar. The resulting taste is reminiscent of soft drinks made in the 1940s and 1950s, before bottlers turned to corn sugar and fructose. View Quote Nailed it. |

My favorite is Thomas Kemper.
Joe's, from here in town, is pretty good, too. |

Barq's. I like the bite.
Dr. McGillicudy's. Slightly strange taste, but I've come to LOVE it. Henry Weinhard's. I had it in Paonia, CO a few years ago and looked at ordering some. I've bought high end bourbon for cheaper than I could get a case of HW's. |

Just a question for the guys who know alot about the 19th century, in the old west. Didn't they drink sarsaparilla back then? and is Root beer actually another name for sarsaparilla? View Quote They're all variations of the same idea. Root Beer used to be typically sassafras flavored. Sassafras was banned because it gave lab rats cancer. Nobody suggested we should just ban it for lab rats but it is what it is. Most root beer now is just a mix of two main flavoring agents, artificial wintergreen and vanilla. Sarsparilla is a similar drink made with the sarsaparilla root or an artificial version of same. Birch beer is a similar drink made with sweet birch, either tips or bark, not sure. "Cola flavor" at it's most basic is just a mix of vanilla and cinnamon. Sometimes with different generics you can tell which predominates if you think about it. The big names in any of the above add other flavors to make their distinct brands different. |

I can't believe some of you guys. Those root beers are disgusting. I consider myself to be a root beer snob, here are some of my favorites, in no particular order: Sprecher Dang! Culvers' restaurant brand St. John's Virgin Island root beer A&W (the only "mainstream" root beer worth drinking) |

Quoted: A&W in a jug, circa 1975. View Quote There is an A&W in Chattanooga that (up until a couple of years ago) make the old-school recipe in a wooden barrel and put a tap on it for you to drink from. That creamy, sugary, root beer-y flavor that I remember from the early 70's. We went there for lunch, and by the time everybody had finished ordering their food at the counter, I'd drunk 8 frosty mugs of the stuff. It was ambrosia and nectar, all rolled into one. I think they said they used 8 lbs. of cane sugar for each 33 gallon batch. |

Never tried it, although we're getting quite a few of them opening here Florida lately. Damn good. Try the pot roast sandwich. And next year in the fall they'll bring back the fried Walleye sandwich. Dear God that thing is amazing... I've got some of their ice cream in the freezer. Might have fill up a growler and bring it home... |

Somewhere I read an article on rootbeer that called it "the bacon of soft drinks". That is true I believe
I will occasionally buy a couple bottles of root beer at the local hardware store. They sell several brands from around the country. I only buy the ones made with cane sugar, not corn syrup when I do that. Most have been very good. The sasparilla flavors are by far the best. |
