Don't the fancy ones have to be calibrated from time to time? How do you calibrate them?

View Quote

In order to trust them all torque wrenches need to be calibrated.  And you send them to the calibration lab.

I have four.
I used to build vintage brutish racing engines, think MG and Triumph.
I have one click type in 1/2", 3/8", and 1/4"
I also have a dial type.
All from Snap-on.
25+ years old.
Too expensive to buy for a hobby builder but since I already have them...
I will need to send them off for calibration if I ever build another engine.

That's what I have. I'm a mechanic.

Two Harbor freights and one Matco.

If you back them off too zero after you use it they will last a long time.

I have a FAT wrench for small firearms projects - I like it fairly well, considering the cost.  I have a Craftsman 3/8" torque wrench for odd intermediate projects, and SnapOn ATECH3FR250A 1/2" for larger fasteners.

I was looking at the Harbor Freight torque wrenches recently, but was skeptical about them. After seeing what y'all are saying about them here, I might pull the trigger on one. Which one would you recommend

before we can even discuss torque wrench accuracy we are going to have to discuss whether the mating threads are dry or lubricated.

Fuck a torque wrench for rings and mounts.

Guudentiet plus 1/4 turn never fails.

I only buy and use Snap On Tools brand torque wrenches.  I prefer to only purchase torque wrenches from someone who is able to recalibrate it.  I have a couple of torque wrenches I have recalibrate roughly every year and other torque wrenches are recalibrated every 2 years.

Borka?  Seekonk?  Where do you get them, IKEA?

I have one of Craftsman from Sears, when they were still being made in the US.

I use a 40 year old Craftsman torque wrench. The only thing I use it for torquing the wheels on my car. I have winter and summer rims and tires

Suspension, steering and internal engine components get torqued down with whatever Harbor Freight torque wrench fits the fastener spec. If I was building high dollar race engines, I'd likely pony up for something 'better'.

All other fasteners get German Torque

Where are you seeing this price?   I see $21.99, and with a 20% off coupon that's $17.59

ETA:  Never mind, I just found the coupons on the HF web site.  Since I already have plenty of bits, for $12, I'm gonna try this.

I have a half inch Snap On I use out of my tool box..    I have all 3 sizes of the HF ones,  and since the lug nut issue, I bought an extra half inch that stays in the jeep for periodically checking lug nuts.   They are not bad at all even @ full price it is a good deal..
