I've been looking for a 12" to 14" camp knife, something akin to a heavy butcher knife or a golok...a rocker shaped 'chopper'...

A few weeks back I was turned on to a custom knife / sheath maker in east Texas and picked up one of his 6" skinning knives...one of the things that is unique about his knives is they are made from farrier rasps, and the remnant of the rasp is left on the flat edges of the blade...

I drew up a sketch of what I was looking for and sent it to him asking if it was something he would be interested in taking on.  A couple texts / pictures and five days later I had the knife and sheath in hand.

The sheath can be worn vertical or horizontal, also has snap straps that can be attached to a backpack or saddle rig...

6" skinning knife

post up your custom knives!!

Nice looking work. It's not uncommon to find makers using rasps as a strarting point though.

I've seen and had other knives made from files...just never the farrier rasps...and most the time they were finished all the way down..

saw a really nice dirk / dagger at the renisance one year made from an old bastard file and the sheath and handle were made from purple heart wood...really nice but they wanted like $500.00 for it....these are definitely more to my liking in the 85 to $150 range..

nice piece in your avatar!!

Looks pretty cool, but I would think the knifes made out of files would be extremely brittle.

guys here can probably tell you a lot more about it than me, but I think they are heated and cooled to anneal the steel....I think it makes it more malleable..

As long as it is tempered properly it will be good to go.

OK I am going to be the asshole here. I love these kinds of knives rasps and file steel good old hard carbon I love.
What a effing bitch to clean. It wants to rust and when something like blood sap tar whatever gets down in those.
The only thing you can use is a wire brush sometimes with hot water followed by a oil. Cross contamination of food is a real problum.
I own several and love them dearly but they don't like me back.I want a slick side knife I can run a rag down and clean off.
Ever watch the BBQ pit boys videos. They use it as a spatula, spoon, lid lifter a knife of course and a pot spoon and are dead cheap redneck stuff.
All my rasp type knives sit at home. Beautiful work by the way. Take a good stiff brush with you. Always cut the meat last with them.
Or everyone gets sick on the salad or potatoes. Just the nature of the beast. But there is extra work involved.

But what do I know.

Never meant to kill it. Great knife, you just have to work with it's design.
Once again beautiful work.

I agree with that. My first was the coolest thing I ever saw.
Never said I didn't like them but it's a labor of love to use them.
If you get my drift.
