I've been doing shift work for years - I work in a 24/7/365 operation - used to work 6-on-3-off 8 hour days, recently had the opportunity to move to 4-on-4-off 11 hour days, and i'm really, really digging this schedule.

what do you guys work?

ETA: 1300-2400 for my hours.

Works out well, I wouldn't change it as long as we stayed on 8hr shifts.

If we had to change I wouldn't mind the 12 hr Pittman rotation (or whatever it's called, heard it called Panama also).   3 day weekend every other week.

that's nice because your days off rotate. I really like rotating days off. the 4-on 3-off 10 hr shift style sticks you on the same days off all the time.

When I worked at US Steel, the department I was in was not a 24/7 operation, but we did work turns.  Usually we would start on daylight sunday, then a crew came out monday morning/midnight, and worked through to wed or thur at 7 am, and then one or two day turns were  down, and daylight fri and sat.  The mindnight and 4-12 crews usually worked mon-fri.  We would rotate to the next turn/shift the next week.  The foreman on daylight at first got to take off wed and thurs (you still got five or six days).  That was great, as I got to do lots of flyfishing in the spring and summer when we did that.
I hated the midnight shift, because I couldn't sleep until maybe wednesday.  And i don't like coffee.  I think I am one of the few who liked or preferred 4-12 shift (no kids).

0600-1400 for 5 days with 2 off

Then I do 1400-2200 for 5 days with 3 off

I'll work 2200-0600 once in awhile on overtime and that really screws me up

3 on 4 off then next week 4 on 3 off.  6pm to 6am.  Sun, Mon, and Tue always off.

The last day worked I sleep 3-4hrs and it's back to bankers hours so I can spend time with wife and kids.

It was okay for the first couple of years, but it REALLY fucks with you after awhile.  I have to take pills to keep my circadian rhythms aligned.  Otherwise no matter how tired I am I wake up every 3-4hrs and it takes hours to get tired again..... only to sleep another 3-4hrs and wake up.

My shifts used to rotate 0600-1400 for 3 days and the next 3 were 1400-2200, then three off. it was brutal for getting on any kind of sleep pattern. I was miserable.

Most of my staff work three 12 hour shifts a week. 3 on, 4 days off every single week.
Our operations are 24/7, so most of it is 0700-1900 and 1900-0700.

4 on 2 off, 5 on 2 off 730aX330p then 4 on 2 off 5 on 2 off 330pX1130p. Same days off for 2 weeks then drop back one day example... Sat/sun-sat/sun, fri/sat-fri/sat,Thu/fri-thu/fri... Etc...

It sucked not being able to do anything on the "weekends" when the wife was working but now that she's a stay at home it's better being able to do things during the week while other people are at work.

Im a tech at a semiconductor fab. It's a 24 hr production facility. I work Thursday through Saturday and every other Wednesday. 7am to 7pm And I love it. Our time off policy is great and I rarely have to use my days. I kinda sucks working every Saturday but whatever.
Previous job was 8 to 5 but the work was mentally exhausting, very high stress, and it always spilled past 5 and most weekends. I'm fine with shift work. We're hourly so ot works out nice when there's training or if your covering somebody.

I worked 24 on 24 off for 9 days, then six off. 0700-0700.  In other words, if you started a "set" on a Monday, you would work Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday, Tuesday then get six off. Then you come back on Tuesday and work Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Monday, Wednesday and get six off. Then come back on Wednesday............................
Keep in mind that if you started out on Monday, you are "off" on Tuesday and everybody just glosses over the fact that you worked for 7 hours of Tuesday (0000 to 0700).

This was great when I was young. After about 25 years I almost couldn't take it anymore. I would come home and sleep for a few hours. But I didn't want to sleep too much because then I couldn't sleep that night to go back the next day. So I felt like shit all day. By about the third shift, I was a zombie. That's not counting overtime of course.  The best part about this schedule was that if you took five shifts of vacation, you were off for 21 days.

I retired from that job and now work part time. This week I have worked an 8 hour shift, a 12 hour shift, and a 24 hour shift. These shifts are on no definite schedule since I am part time. The 12 hour shifts may start at 0700 or they may start at 1900. But we usually arn't very busy, so it isn't all that bad. At my previous job, we were usually awake and working for the majority of the 24 hours.

there's something nice about being able to go to the range or go shopping or whatever you need to do on 10 am on a Tuesday, and no one is around.

I rotate every two weeks. Each shift is two weeks long.

Starts out 1530-2330, with two of those days being 12 hours until 0300 due to mandatory coverage. Monday and Tuesday off

Then two 1530-2330 and three 0730-1530...  Wednesday and Thursday off

Then three 1900-0300 and two 2130-0730... Sunday and Monday off.

Then 2330-0730... Friday and Saturday off

At the end of that the schedule resets with a 5 day long wweekend.off from Friday until 1530 Wednesday.

Confused yet? Once vacations and training come into play watch out!
