To make a long story short, I was in a dirt bike accident. Around 20 years ago, I had to have surgery on my neck, where 2 disc were replaced and a plate put in. Though initially I was put on life time restrictions, I pushed myself with therapy to the point I was taken off those restrictions.

I have had a 20 years of normal life that I was not supposed to have, so I am thankful for that.

I guess it has finally caught up with me.

What on earth caused that?

I have been blessed with a high pain tolerance. Though I do my utmost to stay away from pain killers, there are days I am thankful for the Norcos I have been prescribed.

Good on your friend for doing that for you.

Now if it were me I would be using that extra money to build a nest egg for your family. Your intentions are noble but you have to realize that you and your family MUST come first.

You can help the masses after you make sure your own house is in order.

Since we will have extra income soon, I plan to take a little money each month, to help a Law abiding citizen, get training, a CPL, and if needed and possible, a gun. I will be working to get awareness out there that not everyone who carries a firearm is a bad person.

Well, sorry it is so long, but that is my update. I thank each and every one of you who has taken the time to read this.

This is very good advice.  While the amount you'll be saving might seem significant, it doesn't exactly make you Warren Buffett.  Be very, very cautious and make sure you have a significant bank balance (like six figures - yes before the decimal point) before you start down that path.

I truly doubt it.

You see there is a clear and distinct difference between a man that walks out in our society with long gun slung over his defiant shoulder and for protection of the one's he loves VS those that punch below the belt.

As someone who has chronic back and knee problems, that money can do a lot to help get you get good treatment for years to come.

I don't have health insurance right now, because my option is Obamacare, or no care, and they equal out in cost to me for visits.

ETA: I forgot what model 1911 you got, but I have an IWB leather holster for a 1911 I never use. As long as your frame is a standard government frame, or shorter, it should work.

IM me if you want it.

Thank you for stopping by to share some news of your life, Michael. I have often wondered how things were going for you and your daughter.

It is nice to get an update that has some good news in it (in spite of the issues with your health that you are having to bear). I hope this move is everything you need for your family, and that your daughter has a chance to grow up in a far safer environment. Best wishes for continued good fortune for all of you!

I have the Rock Island Armory .45 1911. I was given a lock in holster for it that is simply fantastic. Though I greatly appreciate your offer, I feel there would be someone else out there who would need it more than I do.

Moving back out into the country has been a dream that I thought I would not see come true. Owning our own home has been another. Being able to teach my daughter how to hunt, fish and live off of the land, well, I really can't put into words, how gratifying it will be to know that she does not have to worry about mob riots, when the SHTF, and she will be able to provide for herself, and protect herself, when the time comes that I am no longer around to do so.

If that was directed at me, then you know nothing about me.

I'm not even sure where to begin to respond, but let me start by explaining this.

When the welfare system was first set up, I want to believe it was honestly put there to help those, temporarily, who had been working, but found themselves jobless.
Unfortunately, there are those who abuse this system, and seem to think that welfare is a lifetime income. These abusers are not only sucking the life out of hard working tax payers, but they have made it so that when a hard working person does find themselves in need of assistance, they are turned down, because the money isn't there for new cases. Or so I was told.

I have worked hard, and done my best to try to make sure that my family is provided for, if nothing else, then at least the basic necessities.

My mother was a single parent raising 8 kids (because my father left when I was 8 years old), and was on welfare. I remember being so embarrassed when we had to use food stamps to make a purchase.

20 years ago, I had a surgery and was told that I would not be able to work again. I refused to accept that, and pushed myself through tears from ungodly painful physical therapy, because I did not want to have to rely on others to care for me.

Being prideful, accepting the fact that I needed help, and then having to ask for it, was the hardest thing for me to do.

So before you start calling someone FSA, know the whole story. Otherwise, you just look like an ass.

Definitely this first.  Get a good savings account going, shoot for a minimum of 3 months of living expenses.  (since your housing expense just went to nill, you should be able to save up to 6 months pretty easily.)  Then, get all your bills paid off.  Then...once you have pure 'profit' or 'disposable' income, then start buying toys, donating to charity, helping others, etc.

My wife and I have sat down and discussed plans on how to accomplish our goals.

Since I already have farming experience, as well as hunting and fishing, we will be growing a good sized area for food, and feed for chickens, which will be used for eggs and meat. Excess eggs can be sold for extra income.

I will be setting up a workshop for my wood working. The money from anything sold will be split up with the cost of materials + 10% going back into the work shop, and the rest going into the family budget.

I plan on spending 5 to 8 hours, a week day, on working on the property and home improvement, and the rest of 10 hours spent in the workshop. (summer hours) and 2 to 5 hours on property and home improvement, with the rest of the 10 hour work day being spent in the work shop, for winter hours.

Our goal, for savings and emergency funds, is $10K. We also plan on starting a savings account for our daughter, to give to her when she turns 18.

I am sure we will find other sources of income as things smooth out, and we see where the needs lie.

For now, these are our goals, and plans on how to achieve them.
