I've tried most of the big box stores with no luck.

Budget is $400.  I don't think I'm being picky either.  Looking for a grey, no pattern or subdued pattern, wool, slim-fit suit.  You know, something to make me irresistible at Denny's.

Any suggestions? (please don't say Men's Warehouse)

For $400, you're going to have a hard time doing much better than Men's Warehouse.

Jos. A. Bank, maybe?

Last suit I bought was $600. 25 years ago.

My favorite suit was from suit supply. I look like a boss in it. They have an online store but I went to one of their locations in Chicago.

Jos A Bank, on their website, in the clearance center.  Got a suit for $78 delivered to the store that was $795 new....then went and got three more.

JAB used to make good stuff, now they're toward the cheap end of mass produced stuff.

If you're around moneyed individuals who can tell what they're looking at, track down a Suit Supply.

If you really just want to look good at Denny's, go to places like Marshall's where last season's stuff goes to die, get something you like and then have it tailored.  Should be <$400 and you'll look better than most.

They used to carry a bunch of high-end stuff pretty damned cheap. Johnny Carson, Hart Schaffner & Marx, Armani and stuff.

Last BCF I was in didn't have much except Big Dog T-shirts and BUFU track suits.

It's tough to get a good suit these days.. most are made of cheap-ass polyester fiber that wears out quickly.  I usually get the wool suits from Brooks but there is no way that's in your range.

For 400.00 I'd either look at Men's Wearhouse or some place like J.C. Penny.   You might have some luck at the thrift store too.. a friend of mine found a really nice Neimann Marcus suit a few years back.

Dragon Inside makes really great suits and $400 will get you their basic ready made suits.  Great fabric, good construction and free shipping.  For a little bit more they can custom tailor.

I will say that if you have big thighs and wear cowboy boots like I do the ready made suit pants can be a little snug.  I just switch to dress shoes when I where the suits and the thigh area isn't too bad.  Overall great quality for the price and the cut is really nice.

I used to travel A LOT for work (basically fly out monday fly home friday).  I put a hurting on suits, and went through my fair share.

For the money Jos. A Bank makes hands down the best value suit under $1k.  Their materials and construction are on par with suits twice their price.  Their cuts can be a little "generous", and usually take a little bit of tailoring, and they're not the most fashion forward.  But for what they cost, they are outstanding.  Most importantly they last (assuming you take care of them properly)

For your price do not go anywhere else.  The Traveler's Suits are 275 and what I usually go with.  The executive suits are also great, and go on sale all the time too, right now they're buy one get 3 free (their best deal), or 60 percent off individual suits (list price for these deals are $650).

I have had good luck at Macy's in the past, but the selection at my local stores is a bit thin lately.  I actually tried the CK suit.  It fit really nice except for the sleeves--they were way too loose at the wrist.  Most other brands were too pointy at the shoulder pads.

I found a Kenneth Cole suit that fit like it was tailored for me, but it was a shiny polyester.  Looked like an extremely well tailored, sexy trash bag.

I'll check out their online stock.

Never felt comfortable buying a suit online.  Don't want to be unfair to them or waste my time with multiple returns.  I'll give them a look though.  Thanks.

ETA: Looks like there is a Brooks Brothers in town.

For $400 I'd try Nordstrom Rack...

Most suits are cheaply made... Big names included.

Try looking up how to tell if it's canvassed. Canvassed is good.

You'll probably want to get it fitted, it will make a cheap suit look good if done properly by a decent tailor.

Yeah, Macy's seems to be doing the retail death spiral.  I hate going there anymore, but they still stock suits at the right price point, especially with their constant "sales."

Mens Warehouse owns them so there is that, but sometimes you can find some smoking deals on rack suits and the tailoring is included in the price. I own five or six K&G suits from my previous life and I like them well enough to wear them although they certainly are not as nice as my complete customs...but they were 1/10 of the price.

I have seen the exact same suit at K&G as I have seen at places like Macy's, at the same time, for half of the sale price that Macy's listed. Same brand, same cut, same material, same pattern/stripes/solid, half or less than half the sale price. Anyhow they are worth a check.

Ebay.

No shit. You can find top name brands (Brooks Brothers, etc.) that were worn once and that's it.

I grabbed a nice Brooks Brothers suit that after tailoring, I had about $150 into.

You have to know your measurements though.

I've heard that those combatant gentleman suits are REALLY nice for the price.

I've never been able to find anything in a normal size in stock. Unless you are a super skinny midget or a huge NFL lineman, everything else seems to be sold out all of the time.
