Given the Virginia class has better littoral capabilities I would hope they are Virginias. A kilo in that neck of the woods would be a legit concern. Shallow and noisie. There are spots in the Gulf where an ssn is longer than the water is deep. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

Well, because it was only a decade or so ago that you had more escorts than that just for the CBG, and the MEU had its own impressive array of escorts. Also, ships can only be in one place at a time, no matter how capable. In any event, I just think we need a definite FFG replacement and we needed it yesterday. Too many ships, not enough missions. I really think the LPD's need those VLS tubes and ESSM's they were designed for for that reason. They don't always have a DDG around. ETA: That infographic shows 2 more DDG's than was shown above. |

Also, during the height of the Cold War, do you know how many escorts an Amphibious Ready Group had? Zero. It was only about 15 years ago that the idea of an Expeditionary Strike Group, putting one or two DDGs with an ARG, was put into practice. And about 10 years ago, the practice was largely abandoned. |

The ARGs did use to have a couple of LSTs before they went to three ship ARGs. Not exactly an escort by any means though. |

The infograph mentions the Sterrett, which has left with the previous CSG, but I did confirm that the USS Farragut, a destroyer, is also part of the Roosevelt's CSG. Also added it to the OP. So that's one more DDG than originally posted. http://news.usni.org/2015/04/17/uss-carl-vinson-carrier-chops-out-of-5th-fleet-roosevelt-picks-up-isis-strike-missions |

Meanwhile, sailing out of Iran..... INS Battleship Death http://peacemoonbeam.typepad.com/.a/6a00d83451af9f69e20176161a7473970c-pi From the stuff I recall seeing, I thought the Iranian navy consisted of a bunch of center console Boston Whaler type fishing boats and a couple commercial shrimp catchers like in Forest Gump seemed with some rocket launchers they repurposed from Vietnam era Huey's. Iran has a few Kilos and Yugos (submarines) that could pose a legitimate threat. Obviously, their competence level and technology is nowhere near ours, but under the right circumstances, they could cause some trouble before being destroyed. If we had no subs in the water. Which is incredibly unlikely if a carrier is nearby. Stickfigure posted the video of what I was thinking about. After seeing that, I just can't take the idea of the Iranian Navy seriously. It reminds me of scenes from one of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies where the sailing ship is traveling across the desert or the Greenpeace tards trying to ram the Japanese whaler. Having said that; needs more Iowa class. |
