Just heard from a neighbor that their son who had gotten his stuff together and was climbing the ladder at a major brokerage company had gotten fired.
He got a call from a colleague in another city who had his ass in a crack and needed to get some bonds converted (I guess they expire and you have to roll them over to avoid tax implications). It was 6 pm on a Friday. The kid mutters "shit, the Bond Desk is closed". (That's the least offensive thing that would have come out of my mouth...) The company reviews phone conversations and with Schw...er, I mean the brokerage firm's ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY he gets fired. Zero tolerance policies are the work of Satan. They allow managers to not have to do their job. You counsel this guy and he won't do it again but, instead, you lose a good, hard working employee. A large number of managers are just better at playing office games and sucking up. TC |

The last company I worked at, they had annual "evaluation day" (where they sat you down and, without exception, listed all the shit you did wrong that year, with documentation then made you sign it). Then, a week later, it was the official "employee review" interview, where they discussed promotions/raises and job opportunities.
Brilliant, really, such a position of leverage when they brow beat you over every non-dotted "i" then in the same breath talk about promotion. And, of course, if you ask for anything at all they are quick to discuss the fresh on everyone's mind list of bad. I don't think in the 3 years I was there I heard of anyone getting anything but a tiny, insignificant raise...mostly insultingly low. I couldn't quit that hell hole any faster. What's funny is when I told them I was leaving, they suddenly offered up a lot more money. I actually laughed in the manager's face, and said "I have a summary of all the unsatisfactory events I've endured, let's go over those before talking about it". |

My friend had perfect attendance all through high school and received an award at the end of the year. He then missed the award ceremony the last day, classic. Everyone cheered for him.

I've rarely seen management even remotely concerned with the happiness of workers. . . View Quote I did once. Private company. We experienced a round of layoffs and the owner, a billionaire, overheard that one of the lower level employees being laid off also has a wife that was just laid off from her job, and they were expecting a baby. He said, "we can't do that to this family," and immediately had the guy hired back on as an employee...and it wasn't just a temporary thing. I haven't seen that level of humanity in a publicly traded company. |

I work for a state agency, and the bullshit is astounding sometimes. One team, a damn fine group of hard-working individuals who had their jobs down pat, had excellent camaraderie, and worked flawlessly together was broken up, placed on "other assignments," and removed from their positions in new-hire training for "horseplay" while on break.
We're already paid shit, shit on by our management, and generally looked down upon as worthless peons. Of course management wants to shit on morale, break up a group that has fun while on break, and remove damn competent people with (previously) high morale from the training program. They wonder why good people are jumping ship for other opportunities. |

I was working a job where 100% of the job can be done completely remotely, from anywhere in the world with an internet connection, at any time of day or night. Immediate supervisor was cool with people working remotely. Hell, all our applications were web-based to a server a few states away, so even in the office we were still "working remotely". Upper management refuses to let people work from home because they "don't trust" that they are working, and they have a masturbatory fantasy of everyone working in a "team environment" in the office…meaning in dull, gray, mostly quiet cubicles. So now instead of some employees getting some overtime from home (easily verifiable that they are actually working based on how the systems were set up) and going the extra mile when we have a backlog of work, that all stops. Upper management wonders why production is slowing down. Good going fostering high morale, dickheads. "Oh you don't trust us to work remotely? Guess we'll stop putting in extra hours from home to clear out the backlog." HR complained that our office was pretty flexible with when employees could come and go (apparently other company offices weren't, and I guess that isn't fair). It made for a nice environment where people were treated as adults and if you wanted to go to the gym for 2 hours in the middle of the day you could, as long as your work got done. So that ended, making people pretty upset since it had been like that for years and suddenly the had to re-arrange their life schedules to keep HR happy. Oh and there's a dress code requirement (meaning khakis/button-up/nice shoes as a minimum) even though this office is completely internal to the company and doesn't see outside clients. Everyone here literally comes in, stares at their computers all day, and goes home. But there's "casual Fridays" where we were allowed to wear jeans and a golf shirt. If it's ok on Friday, why isn't it ok every other day? The complete absurdity of that situation is off the scale. "This job can be done 100% from anywhere at any time, so let's make people dress up and come into the office and sit in cubes, and take away their flexible schedules just to keep up appearances. Why are they unhappy?!?!" View Quote C'mon, you know us manager types like 'control.' Yeah, I know what you're saying, as long as the work gets done who gives two shits how and where it's done. That attitude is slowly changing, the one benefit of 'out-sourcing' has been to shift that paradigm. |

Annually, we are given surveys to report on our impressions of management.
Each year, before the survey, our manager brings it up in a staff meeting and lets us know that anything less than a perfect score on a given question is considered a zero by management. So things like: "My manager <does whatever> properly" you can answer anywhere from 1-strongly disagree, 2-disagree, 3-neutral, 4-agree, 5-strongly agree. If you pick anything less than 5, the HR department scores it as not meeting standards and the manager has to follow up on it all. The first couple of years they did this I had a manager I hated, and I assumed (because he was a manipulative jerk) that he was simply trying to get us to give him better scores. Later, under a manager I know and trust, we were still being given the exact same talk. I realized talking to him about it that it wasn't BS, that's actually the way HR scores the survey. I can help but wonder, if that's the case, why there are more than two options. |

Damn I thought I had it bad........
Last thursday I found out through the grape vine that my employers had been doing interviews for the "Hazmat/Emergency Response Team" coordinator (Chief). I had for the last year been waiting for this job to come open again as the last fuck they hired, turns out he had no fire, ems or hazmat anything. For the past year I had been helping the ESHA (which is the department the ERT team falls under) manager with coordinating offsite training at local fire colleges, order bunker gear and other equipment that was needed, keep up the records and help maintain the fire truck, doing and conducting quarterly training, you name it! As she was clueless..... As most of the members of the ERT team was and are..... I even helped with and took a few regulatory classes on Hazardous waste, as the individual who does that had needed help, thinking it would give me another feather in my hat, as Hazwaste also falls under the ESHA department... Thinking, when the ERT chiefs job came open, I would have a better shot , she could justify me by saying I already know other functions in the department, and would be a better asset. Then the asshat they interviewed thursday... Former Orlando Fire Department FF/EMT... With SOME OSHA certs, but "he's learning more" is what they told me, no Hazmat experience, "But he can learn hazmat" is what they said also... "That's what we need!" they said... "FF/EMT....!" What the FUCK am I? I and three other guys are the only state certified FF/EMT's on the entire goddamn emergency response team...We are the only ones who are reserve or volunteer FF outside of work and have a ton of experience then the other 40 odd guys who are only trained in industrial, flammable liquid fire fighting BS (Which is not even recognized by the state from a cert stand point) and medically trained to the first responder level... I was so pissed when I found this out.. I had tears in my eyes.. I wasn't even aware the job had come open, and it wasn't posted for me to even apply. Fuck it... |

Definitely some fucked up situations in here. I quit signing my evaluations for about the last 5 years of my tenure. I wasn't going to willingly take part in a rigged game. The director at one of my jobs changed our schedules because he thought it would fix a problem that he was having with a few idiots calling out too much or trying to come in and sleep all day. It fucked all of our lives, the problem with callouts got even worse, and now everybody sleeps as much as possible because we all have to get up two hours earlier and then go to a much busier job the next day. He said the other day that he absolutely wouldn't be changing it back because it "does me good to see people coming in less tired". Hopefully I'll be out of there in about a month or two, leaving a space that he's unable to fill. I figure that he's got about six months until the service collapses and they bring in a private company to replace it.

She work for this company for years and always got good reviews and raise's along with a nice bonus every Christmas. She shows up for work one mourning and the head of HR meets her at the door and tells her she has been laid off and that they will send her personal stuff to her when they get it boxed up and wont let her in the building. I show up and walk in the building and tell the HR dude I am here to get my wife's personal stuff and he says we will send it to you to which I replied we will see about that. I go outside and after making a couple of phone calls an officer from the PD shows up and said Joseph what's the problem my wife tells him the story and the officer says we will see about that. He walks in the building and tells the HR guy that we are going to get her personal stuff and anyone that interferes with that is going to be arrested for theft and 30 minutes latter we had her stuff loaded in my company truck and were out of there. Funny thing is they wouldn't let anyone talk to her and wanted us to carry her stuff out the back door and the Vice President was no where to be found .
