The AM radio guys keeps telling me the stock market is at record highs. Just logged into Principal and my 401k is 2.23% for the year to date. This is a record?
In case someone cares, my 401k consists of VTIVX and VINIX. I don't get it. |

It's been THREE MONTHS. Jeez. What do you expect? We had a huge crash yesterday too. Just chill. Unless we hit a depression, look at it over 10 years and get back to me.
tl;dr: Stocks go up, stocks go down. |

Mine is somewhere around 10% gain so far this year.
I'm satisfied with it. I'm almost 37 years old and I think my 401k has made more in interest this year than I've made in gross salary. |

Most of your profits go to pay the multi-million dollar salaries of the fund managers.

The s&P record high close was in late February, it looks like 2129.
I have had a great run last 2 years, I am all in cash in my 401k now. |

Sounds like you're in a stock / bond mix for the long haul. The guys who brag about raking it in while the market is up but get curiously silent when the market is down amuse me. |

It's just that even today the radio guys were going on and on about how sky high it is, and then I log in to see 2.23%. At least it's not negative. |

It's time for a crash. Pull back profits and wait for the valley. It's a cycle, we are 6-7 years climbing the current peak, time for a valley.

That makes me feel pretty good about mine then. Just out of curiosity this thread made me check my YTD return. While better than the OP's, its still not worth jumping up and down about. |

It's at all time highs, but it was pretty high to start the year too. Your 401(k) since 2009 should have done very well.

I'm in some fairly aggressive mutual funds and I'm doing ok. Then again I just let it sit and do nothing.

The stock market is at/near record highs...but it made most of those gains over the past couple of years.
A couple of percent in a couple of months is average. |

Because it's April?
Shit I lost 1.5% of my account's total on Friday alone. Run a 12 month average. You should invest with a calendar rather than a stop watch. I was on bankrate.com's site tonight looking forward to where I'll be in 10 years if I keep investing and doing well. I liked what I saw, big numbers. |

Time value of money: believe it! |

But since July 2014 the dollar has skyrocketed, and raising interest rates would push it higher, which the fed might use as justification to not raise interest rates. I could be making a mistake. |

a) It's only April.
b) Those records are relative are on a scale that is not limited so will (hopefully) continue to rise to infinity (e.g. NOT a scale from 1 to 10), so will continue to set records for all eternity. |

It goes against Benjamin Graham's advice to stay in the market and not try to time it, but I made like 20% in 2013 and 16% in 2014 and feel like I am pushing my luck, especially because those gains are mostly due to ZIRP and QE, and there could be a big draw down prompted by the fed raising interest rates. They said they would if unemployment got better and it has. I know that's a bogus measure but that's what the fed said they were looking at as justification for ZIRP and QE. But since July 2014 the dollar has skyrocketed, and raising interest rates would push it higher, which the fed might use as justification to not raise interest rates. I could be making a mistake. I made massive amounts of money last year, and so far this year is looking pretty good.
If I have another couple good years I will probably retire. I am looking forward to the day that my yearly gains = $1M...it's coming soon and I can't wait. |

The stock market has been treading water so far this year. If it wasn't for the dividends on my stocks, I'd be flat. 2015 is not going to be a banner year like 2013.
I fear that we may be coming to the end of the bull market. It's too early to liquidate, but I'd be watchful. Economic developments in Europe (for example, a Greek exit from the euro) could have an outsize effect. |
