I built a coffee can forge this weekend, too bad my torch doesn't get it hot enough to anneal the files I have

I have ideas on how to make things work though.

I used BernzO-Matic MAP-Pro™:   torches 2 of them to do the heating work...

being very careful to not over heat the steel when annealing (basically leaving it slightly magnetic)
when hardening I heat them up so that they were not magnetic at all

and used an oven for the tempering work...

seem to work out ok

but with torches the work area of the steel is small

You might want to consider doing something along these lines. I'm considering building one to use as a forge.

What are you using for fuel?  If you're using just propane try switching to MAP gas.

I thought about it, but I going to see if I can get the coffee can forge to work first.    I'm only using it to mess around with my old files, so I'm not really at a loss if it doesn't work.   I think I just need a better torch, and may have been better off lining the inside with a ceramic wool instead of the sand/plaster of paris mix

map gas is only a little bit hotter unless you use it in conjunction with oxy...then it gives you more heat

Did some etching on my chainsaw damascus blade tonight.  It's really hard to get a good photo of the pattern, but I like it.

Dad bought back two machete's from Viet Nam. Guy he got them from made them from leaf springs and hardwood handles . Used the piss out of them. Nice heavy blade. Never needed sharpening. Everyone alway's wanted to know where they could get one.

Thanks.

I'm a total newb though.  I just got an anvil a month ago.  Forge welded blades intrigue the hell out of me.

Wow, that's seriously amazing. Anything special go into treating it?

I let it soak in aluminum wheel cleaner acid for about 30 minutes to get the pattern to show.  Some other acids may work better, but I had to work with what I had.

Started one another one.  A little bigger than the last, and I seem to be getting better at welding.  Gonna be a small kitchen knife for the woman.

Do those require heat treating, does a file make a good blade. I like the design looks like it would make a good self defense EDC if you made a kyodex sheeth for it. I have been wanting to give knife making a try.
