Some guy called me at my business, said he was with Greentree and had a personal business matter to discuss.  I said, OK, what about.  He said he couldn't tell me until I verified my home address and social security number.  Yeah, fuck off.  I told him no way that was happening, he was welcome to read them off to me and I would confirm or deny that it was me.  He said "I can't do that, I don't know for sure who you are, and I can't just give out that information."  I literally LOLed and said "But you think I'm going to give my information to some random guy who calls and wants it?"

We went back and forth for 5 minutes or so, before I told him to get his supervisor on the phone.  I told that guy "Don't call ANY of my numbers ever again."  He said I would have to put it in writing.  I reminded him that he was calling a business line and not to call it again.  He said he would just call the other numbers I have.  I reminded him that any other number I have are cell numbers, I do not have a land line,  and I would incur usage charges if they called them, which would be a violation of the FDCPA.  I said if they wanted to continue any further communication, they could do so in writing.  He says "Sure, no problem.  Can you just confirm your mailing address and SS?".    I hung up on him.

For the record, I don't owe ANY money to any company called Greentree.  I don't have any negative items on my credit report.  I literally have no idea what they are calling about.  I'm pretty sure it was some kind of scam or something.

Damn, You might still check your credit report for something funky.

Guy I used to work with had his identity borrowed by a tool truck dealer. $18,000 on his credit. oops.

As honest as your previous employer was, you never know what might happen.

Getting ready to start doing that with travel nursing agencies that keep calling.

I had an Indian sounding dude call from a call center saying I had cosigned for a loan my partner took out and she failed to pay and I owed them $300. Hung up on him. Googled the number and found out that they called other people and called again several days later. Sure enough, he called again several days later.

Hindouche: "Blah blah blah, you owe us money."

Me: "Wow, how much?"

Hindouche: "$300!"

Me: "Well can you take a debit card?"

Hindouche: "Yes! Yes we can take debit card!"

Me: "OK, hang on while I get my wallet..." Then several seconds later: "Oh man, you know what? I think my wallet fell out of my pants at your mother's house while I was fucking her in the ass last night."

Hindouche (in his native tongue): @*^% #@*&!!!!!! *click*

Never heard back from him.

You only have to send a letter to have them not call your home phone number.  If you tell them they can't call you cell or your work, they have to stop.  I've never received anything in the mail from these clowns, nor have I ever done business with a company called greentree.  I also know for a fact that I don't have any currently outstanding (defaulted or unpaid) debt.  If they're legit, it's possible they bought an old debt from 15 or 20 years ago.  Even then, I think I'm squared up with everything...  I know for sure I don't have anything on my credit report from them or anyone else.

I own the place, so yeah, sorta.    As it turns out, my boss doesn't allow collection calls at my place of employment.  He's a real prick.

"Causing the Debtor to Incur Charges by Concealing the "True Purpose" of the Call
Another provision of the FDCPA prohibits debt collection agencies from causing you to incur charges or costs by hiding the true purpose of the call. Originally, this applied to things like collect calls and telegrams. However, today, it can also be applied to many people's cell phones if they will incur usage charges for the call. If it's not clear from the caller ID information or phone number that the call is from a debt collector, then the collector would be concealing the "true purpose" of the call -- which is debt collection.
Unless the consumer is very familiar with the debt collector's phone number or name from prior calls, it's unlikely that most consumers will know they are getting a call from a collector on their cell phone."

I don't know, that's what I googled up while I was on the phone with the guy.  Like I said, I was bored and killing time.  From further research it seems that the Telephone Consumer Protection Act combined with the FDCPA makes it illegal for them to call you on a cell phone if calls cost you money.  I figured I'd throw it at them and see what happened.

I don't think that's the same place.

This is the number that called and the comments indicate they're trying to collect really old debt or its some other kind of scam.

Report to the do not call list, & maybe write a letter to your state attorney general that you're being harassed by someone who is trying to steal your identity.

Lots of advice in this thread to "...hang up on 'em...!".  I do the opposite.  When they ask for something, I'll say, "...let me get my wallet...".  I lay the phone down and walk away.  They piss away *their* time waiting for me to come back - and I'm out mowing the lawn or some such.  Plus it runs up their phone bill.

I'm pretty sure that if they called ME and caught me at a time when I had nothing better to do, I'd track them down and sue them under the FDCPA for violating 1692g and1692e(11) when they failed to give me all the proper notices, and any other 1692e violations they committed.

I switched carriers on my work cell 3 years ago.

I used to get debt collection calls for the deadbeat douche that used to have that number.

Now it's telemarketers from various area codes all over the U.S.

Now when they call and ask, "Is Justin XXXX there?"

I simply replay, "There is no Justin XXXX, there is only Zool."

I like to ask them to hold while I finish jacking my dog off because I own a puppy mill which is very profitable. Then I cue my dog to howl a little and thank the caller for their patience. To me, it sounds like a legitimate attempt to collect a debt (probably from a "same name debtor"), most scammers will talk about taking you to court if you don't give them info, here's what you do...

1. Get a recorder
2. Attach to phone line
3. Record next conversation with supposed bill collector
4. If it's a real bill third party collector, they WILL violate the FDCPA if you get them flustered (very simple to do)
5. Take to FDCPA specialist attorney (most work on % of winnings)
6. Profit

So sayeth the former third party debt collector. The FDCPA and a few more recent rulings have made debt collection, even from actual scumbag, deadbeat, lifestyle debtors, exceptionally difficult to do without breaking some part of the fairly complex laws.
