Surprised no one has said Game Of Thrones yet.
It breaks viewing records every season. |

The Wire followed by Breaking Bad and Star Trek: The Next Generation
|

The Wire is king. Also rans are Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Entourage, Walking Dead, Mad Men, Deadwood, Californication, Weeds. AMC, HBO, and Showtime put out the best shows. The network shows generally suck.

The Wire, Breaking Bad, The Shield, Rome, Firefly, South Park, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Lots of really great television in the last 20 years, but the above shows stand apart as truly exceptional in my book. |

Jersey Shore
Game of Thrones Lost Battlestar The Shield Rescue me Breaking bad |

I have a short list...
Breaking Bad Battlestar Galactica reboot True Detective |

Don't think it is possible to do greatest, just too many over the years. Recent stuff 1) Breaking Bad 2) Sopranos 3) The Wire Blacklist is ok, mainly due to James Spader, really liked Boston Legal also. Deadwood was over too quick. Boardwalk Empire was great, Steve Buscemi was great in that. Loved Dukes of Hazard when I was a kid. In Living Color was probably one of the funniest shows ever, with Carol Burnett being pretty close. Hell on Wheels was alright, but after they killed off Lily (Dominique McElligott) I kinda lost interest. |

Tonight Show with Johnny Carson
Mash Rawhide Bonanza The Naked City Boston Legal |

Breaking Bad
The Wire Deadwood Seinfeld Rome I loved The Shield but it doesn't quite make my top 5. I'm not counting shows currently in production or mini-series. |

MASH View Quote My father in law is a Korean Conflict vet. He loathes that show. He says it's hard to believe they got so much wrong. Just political garbage. The cold was one of the hardest things for him. He promised himself if he got back home he would never be cold again. He got off the plane in Texas in August and bought an electric blanket before going home. ETA: WKRP is probably my favorite. Phone cops ftw. |

The Wire for cable, and Magnum P.I. for network. If True Detective can match the first season and last for a bit, it will be a contender as well.

moonlighting, and the wonderful brain of david addison.
"does a butter fly? does a picket fence?" no one ever had addison, hawkeye pierce, or bugs bunny at a loss for words. |

View Quote Rome kicked ass, Strike Back is awesome, the most important is likely Band of Brothers...but you said "ever." So I think I'm going with the original "V" (1983) simply because it had everything. Hot lizard chicks, heavy third reich cautionary tales and a bunch of greedy bastards helping the aliens destroy the planet for profit, and several years before "They Live" I might add. Lots of other really great shows past and present, but I think "V" might be the best when you account for time and place. What a fun ride that show was. |
